BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC) have at a minimum, a bachelor's degree, with a master's degree preferred, successfully completed the NATABOC certification examination, have or be eligible for Virginia licensure with the Board of Medicine. The ATC shall have successful experiences working with a diverse student population and demonstrate the ability to interact and communicate with others in a continued, cooperative effort to ensure the student-athlete's best health and wellness needs are being met. The ATC shall pursue the endorsement to teach Sports Medicine as a paraprofessional. The ATC must also become a VHSL Certified Measurer. The ATC shall be certified in First Aid, CPR, AED and as a Professional Rescuer that includes professional oxygen administration. The ATC will also be required to participate in annual OSHA training for blood borne pathogens.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Certified Athletic Trainers shall have at a minimum, a bachelor's degree, a master's degree preferred, successfully completed the NATABOC certification examination, have or be eligible for Virginia licensure with the Board of Medicine.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Be able to lift weights and apparatus associated with injury rehabilitation.
• Lift, assist, and/or transport an injured student athlete.
• Withstand long hours of standing to provide sideline coverage for games and practices.
• Spatial awareness to prevent sideline injuries to one's self or student-athletes due to a collision.
• Carry 20 lb+ first aid kit and ice cooler for practices and contests.
• Provide and transport filled 10 gallon water coolers for hydration of student-athletes and coaches.
• Perform the skills related to tapping and wrapping techniques applied to student athletes.
• Extricate or transport injured athletes.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

In cooperation with physicians and other allied health personnel, and with school administrators, athletic directors, coaches and parents, the athletic trainer, ATC, functions as an integral member of the athletic health care team in the high school. The ATC works with individuals engaged in physical activity in the prevention of injuries and illnesses, the recognition, evaluation, and immediate care of injuries and illnesses, the rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and illnesses, and the administration of this health care system. This individual must have current certification in CPR and be qualified in first aid and blood borne pathogens. The ATC ensures that the student-athlete is able to participate in practices and games following a sports related injury. Additionally, the ATC completes documentation on the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of student athletes, as well as communicating with school administrators, coaches, and parents regarding a student-athletes' participation status. The ATC will assist in developing formal educational or instruction on subject matter related to athletic training or sports medicine for high school classes.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

• Work collaboratively with all stakeholders in providing a World-Class Education.
• Specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and sudden illnesses that occur in student athletes.
• Provide management and care of injuries to student athletes as defined in the state practice acts, and in accordance with other state organizations and county regulations and policies.
• Conduct an initial assessment of a student athlete's injury or illness in order to provide emergency or continued care and determine whether the student athlete should be referred to a physician for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
• Provide care for athletic related injuries using treatment modalities and rehabilitation equipment and techniques.
• Evaluate athletes' readiness to play, or return to participation, and provide participation clearances when necessary and warranted.
• Apply protective or re-injury preventative devices such as padding, wraps, bandages, and tape.
• Maintain appropriate general treatment orders to be reviewed annually and approved by team physician.
• Provide athletic training services for all home in-season sanctioned regularly scheduled athletic contests and away varsity football games. If conflict arises between an away varsity football game and a home contest, the varsity football event will supersede.
• Develop emergency response plans (or review any current plans) for each sport's specific practice or contest venue; implement and practice such plans with appropriate personnel prior to each sport's season.
• Administer the VHSL Weight Control Program and ImPACT concussion testing.
• Act as a liaison between family physicians and specialists, the school administrators, athletic director, coaches, athletes, and their parents.
• Maintain accurate records of injuries, and care or treatments provided to student athletes.
• Develop inventory control and order supplies and equipment used in providing athletic training services.
• Develop and maintain a budget for the athletic training program.
• Coordinate scheduling of pre-participation sports physicals with athletic director, administrators, and ATC's from other county high schools.
• Provide the coaches and athletic director with a list of student athletes medically eligible to compete under county, district, and state rules and regulations.
• Provide athletic director and coaches a list of injured student athletes and their participation status in a timely manner.
• Maintain accurate records regarding environmental conditions that may influence the health and well being of student-athletes during participation under such conditions, i.e., heat, humidity, cold, or other inclement weather.
• Develop lesson plans for providing instruction on athletic training or sports medicine topics to high school students.
• Provide opportunities for students to practice and reinforce theories and skills discussed and demonstrated in the classroom, in accordance with state and national rules and regulations.
• Supervise students as they practice athletic training services during selected team practices and/or sports contests as permitted by laws, regulations, and policies.
• Complete other duties as assigned within the scope of athletic training.
