BASIC FUNCTION: Assist project managers, administrators, contractors and other customers in the design and implementation of technology workspaces.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Network Infrastructure Specialist I:

Under limited supervision, assist project managers, administrators, contractors and other customers in the design and implementation of technology workspaces. This position requires a Bachelor's degree in a computer engineering related field and 3 years experience.

Network Infrastructure Specialist II:

Serve as project manager for projects relating to wiring and network infrastructure. Manage contractor outreach, pre-bid job walks and bid evaluation. This position includes high levels of interaction with internal and external contractors and vendors and requires a Bachelor's degree in a computer engineering related field and 5 years of experience.

E = Essential Functions

Under limited supervision, assist project managers, administrators, contractors and other customers in the design and implementation of technology workspaces. E

Ensure that District technology standards are met in the implementation of new facilities, modernization or repair of existing facilities, and creation of new technology workspaces. E

Serve as project manager for projects relating to wiring and network infrastructure. E

Manage contractor outreach, pre-bid job walks and bid evaluation. E

Work with Facilities Department project managers on projects that include wiring and network infrastructure. E

Review site needs and obtain bids from contractors for cabling projects in compliance with Technology Services Department procedures as well as District procurement procedures. E

Review facilities drawings and vendor proposals and recommend modifications as necessary to bring into compliance with District standards and best practices. E

Document and maintain a library of documentation and drawings (paper and digital) of all associated facilities and procedures related to District technology infrastructure. Technology infrastructure includes voice, video and data communications. E

Document and maintain accurate records of discrepancies and deviations from technology standards. E

Inspect work completed and cabling test results and provide statements for follow-up work required. E

May perform some cabling installation and repair. E

Troubleshoot problems with network connectivity that may include passive or active components. E

Work closely with other Technology Services personnel to coordinate and facilitate changes needed for departmental projects. E

Meet with teachers, site technologists, administrators and other customers to determine their technology needs; make recommendations for systems implementation, and obtain quotes for labor and passive and active components; prepare RFP or statement of work for vendors; walk sites with vendors prior to estimate; and review work completed. E

Accurately document all new system implementations and modifications to existing systems (moves, adds, changes). E

Maintain existing systems, ensuring that proper fail-safe, failure recovery and security procedures are followed. E

Provide technical assistance to staff inside and outside of the Technology Services Department. E

Configure switches, print servers and routing equipment. E

Research and provide expertise on integration of third party software and tools. E

Assist in the administration of a LAN/WAN networking environment. E

Provide third level technical assistance with District Help Desk to coordinate effective resolutions for customer problems. E

Actively participate on project teams. E

Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Infrastructure Specialist I: Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to: a Bachelor's degree in a computer or engineering related field and three years experience maintaining network infrastructure equipment and designing technology work centers in a multi-site, multi-OS environment.

Infrastructure Specialist II: Requirements of the Infrastructure I and any combination of education, training, and/or experience equivalent to: a bachelor's degree in computer or engineering related field and five years experience.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California Driver's License

Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, tuberculosis and/or other employment clearance

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Low-voltage cabling standards and practices, fiber-optic cabling standards and test procedures, and data infrastructure design

Router and switch configuration using equipment from Cisco and other vendors as well as VLAN methods and best practices

TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, and other network protocols

Project management techniques

ABILITY TO:

Schedule and coordinate workload

Work without direct supervision

Meet commitments and due dates

Work well under pressure

Communicate well both orally and in writing

Create formal work instructions

Interpret "as-built" diagrams, blueprints and test results

Perform basic troubleshooting on computer workstations, printers, computer servers, switches, hubs, routing equipment, media converters and other passive and active components of a wide area network

Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations, using tact, patience and courtesy

Analyze and problem solve

Provide excellent customer service

Respond promptly, accurately and courteously to all inquiries

WORKING CONDITIONS

ENVIRONMENT:

Offices and school sites; driving vehicle to work locations

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Pulling cables and wires, using hand and power tools and working in awkward positions that include frequent bending; standing and walking for extended periods and frequently climbing and working on ladders; lifting and handle items weighing up to 50 pounds; using hands to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reaching with hands and arms; speaking clearly and concisely, in person and on the telephone; seeing and reading fine print; hearing and understanding in person and on the telephone; frequent standing and sitting; occasional walking; climbing stairs, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
