The Salem Public Schools is seeking an innovative and collaborative educator to teach English as a Second Language (ESL) to students in grades 6-8 as part of the ELL Department's focus on accelerating students' social and academic language acquisition. This is an exciting opportunity for a teacher who has a strong pedagogical knowledge of language acquisition and who is passionate about teaching recent immigrants and long-term language learners. The successful candidate will be comfortable making connections with children representing a range of needs and maintaining a positive and respectful environment through effective classroom routines. The successful candidate will also possess an unwavering belief in the power of school communities to make a difference in the lives of children. This individual will work under the general supervision of the principals and assistant principals of the Collins Middle School as well as the District Director for English Language Learning. She/he will be evaluated following the professional standards articulated in the Massachusetts Teacher Rubric.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teaches ESL classes to ELL students that are aligned to WIDA Can-Do Descriptors, Common Core Standards, and provide students with rigorous opportunities to engage in critical thinking and language learning in all domains
  • Plans curricula and daily lesson plans that are accessible, scaffolded, and utilize complex texts
  • Promotes a positive classroom environment that celebrates the diversity of the student population and fosters a love of learning
  • Demonstrates a commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students by building on the strengths that students bring to the language learning process
  • Leverages extensive knowledge of first and second language acquisition in planning and collaborating with general education teaching colleagues
  • Communicates regularly and proactively with parents and families in a culturally proficient manner
  • Evaluates each student's formative progress in English skills (listening speaking, reading, and writing) and prepares progress reports
  • Serves as an advocate for the needs of the ELL students on grade level and instructional teams
  • Works under the general supervision of the building principal, ELL Director, and/or other designated administrator, to review student proficiency levels, appropriate ESL services, and ELL data
  • Additional duties may be assigned

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree (Required) Masters Degree preferred
  • Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in ESL; Highly Qualified status under No Child Left Behind
  • The ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Second Language (Spanish, Portuguese) Proficiency strongly preferred
  • Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply
  • Secondary license in content area or Special Education, also preferred
  • Proven track record of raising student achievement scores in an urban/turnaround environment
  • Strong desire to work within a turnaround, extended day, urban educational program
  • Current authorization to work in the United States required

New Teacher Orientation for all first year teachers and all teaching staff new to the Salem Public Schools for the 2018/2019 School Year will be held on August 21st and 22nd, 2018. This is a required commitment of all new teaching staff. Professional Development for all teaching staff (new and returning) will begin on August 28, 2018.
