Bed-Stuy New Beginnings:

Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School is an elementary and middle school proudly serving the students in our neighborhood in Brooklyn, affectionately known worldwide as 'Bed-Stuy'. Opened in 2010, we serve more than 670 scholars in Kindergarten - Eighth Grade through the pursuit of 21st century learning, project based & service learning, and traditional coursework strategies, students will be prepared to succeed in academically competitive schools as well as become responsible citizens of the global community.

Our Assistant Principal:

Our Assistant Principal is a key player in the development of our learning environment and management of our Elementary School team. You will assist the Principal in organizing and fostering a positive, safe environment that is conducive to best meeting the needs of all students, staff and parents. This includes such responsibilities as: leading, directing, counseling, and supervising a variety of personnel and programs; creating effective parent, teacher, child communications, supporting, encouraging, mentoring, and evaluating staff; fostering teamwork between teachers and among staff and parents; and managing budget items.

A day in the life of our Assistant Principal:
  • Assist the Principal in developing and maintaining an effective educational program consistent with the mission of the school, policies and goals of the charter; meeting and conferring with students, parents, faculty and staff; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.
  • Assist the Principal in the overall administration of the school; interpret and enforce school policies and regulations.
  • Assist the Principal in the transformation of the school culture into a results-oriented collaborative learning community.
  • Support the Principal in the collaborative development, implementation, and ongoing refinement of the school's instructional plan.
  • Assist the Principal in monitoring compliance with federal, state, and local mandates and guidelines related to local and state testing programs and the local special education program.
  • Assist the Principal in planning and implementing a professional development/growth program for teachers and staff.
  • Serve as Principal in the absence of the regular Principal.
  • Propose schedules of classes and extracurricular activities; help schedule courses, students and teachers.
  • Assist in maintaining discipline throughout the student body; deal with special cases as necessary.
  • Serve with parents, faculty, and student groups, as requested, in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
  • Maintain a variety of files; prepare periodic and special reports as required. Identify the special needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of school system specialists as required.
  • Supervise teachers and departments as assigned by the Principal.
  • Explain and interpret division-wide curriculum/instructional goals and objectives to teachers, parents, pupils, and the community.
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of a systematic method of supervising the instructional program through the use of learning walks, observations, documentations, and follow-up conferences.
  • Assist teachers in evaluating methods and materials and developing effective learning plans and classroom management techniques.
  • Curriculum/Instruction - Assist in: selection, training and implementation of standards and initiatives; scheduling; implementation of goals and selection of instructional materials. Analyze test data, determine ways to improve instruction and student goals. Design and implement programming for RTI, assisting with programming for ESL students and students with disabilities, etc.
  • Facilitate professional development and lead Professional Learning Communities
  • Assists in screening, interviewing, and recommending employment for new staff
  • Models Parent Engagement Process for the RTI Model:
    • Functions as key connector for RTI Students between parents to their teachers, models effective parent and community engagement strategies for all pedagogues and leverages parent engagement to improve grades academic performance. Includes academic, disciplinary and attendance support.

What you need to bring to the table:

Education: Master's degree in Education, School Building Leadership or equivalent preferred.

Experience: Must have a measurable and proven record of teaching and/ or school leadership success in an urban District, Private or Charter School.Teaching experience: Must have at least (5) years of prior successful experience teaching elementary students in an urban school. Must have experience teaching multiple grade levels. School Leadership experience: Prior experience in mentoring and coaching teachers in the school environment is preferred. Must have experience with conducting staff professional development.

Certification: Certificates as determined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). NYSED Teacher certification: Must have a valid teacher's certificate in appropriate subject and with grade specific endorsement(s) issued by the NYSED. NYSED Teacher certification in Childhood Education or Students with Disabilities Grades 1-6 is preferred. NYSED School Administrator or Supervisor, School District Administrator or School Building Leader, or School Building Leader certification preferred.

Interpersonal Skills: Works well with others from diverse backgrounds. Focuses on solving conflict; maintaining confidentiality; listening to others without interrupting; keeping emotions under control; remaining open to others' ideas and contributing to building a positive team spirit. Demonstrated ability to successfully work with and developing educators in a school environment.

Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer usage and ability to use, e-mail, internet and word processing software, and spreadsheets including, but not limited to Google Suite applications, Microsoft Office Suite applications and Apple MacBook iOs.

Other Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of child growth and development at each level of instruction and of the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of adolescent students. Possesses knowledge of effective behavior management methods. Ability to meet timelines and exercise good judgment while working in a dynamic environment. Other skills and abilities required are:
  • A deep level of understanding of the Common Core State Standards
  • Evidence of success in working with teachers
  • Evidence of strong planning and organizational skills
  • In-depth knowledge of a variety of reading and writing instructional strategies necessary to support the Common Core State Standards in all content areas
  • Ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of the school.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
  • Evidence of establishing and maintaining effective working
    relationships with students, parents, staff, and the public.
  • Knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development,
    instructional practices, interpretation of test data
