Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools

Objective:

Under the direction of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools shall plan, organize, and direct the overall functioning and management of Diocesan secondary schools (Holy Name Junior/Senior High School, St. Bernard’s Central Catholic High School, and St. Peter-Marian Junior/Senior High School) and make recommendations for increasing effectiveness and efficiency across schools at the secondary level.  The Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools will work from each of the schools but meet regularly with the Catholic Schools Office staff at the Chancery.

Essential functions:

Lead, support and stimulate a collaborative environment within and across secondary schools that will empower and enable Diocesan secondary school leaders and staff to meet identified instructional, operational, budgetary and enrollment goals;

Ensure that school environments are designed and maintained so they remain consistent with Catholic values and teachings at all times;

Coordinate educational and non-educational operations among secondary schools for the purpose of ensuring that Diocesan objectives are achieved and resources are effectively utilized;

Collaborate with the Associate Superintendent of Business to develop systems for effectively monitoring budget allocations, expenditures and related financial activities to ensure that allocations are accurate, revenues are recorded, expenses are within budget limits and Diocesan fiscal practices are followed;

Oversee the preparation and coordination of school based budgets and tracking of financial expenditures;

Work collaboratively with the Catholic Schools Office and secondary school principals to coordinate the educational programs of the Diocese;

Establish and maintain productive partnerships with a variety of external organizations engaged in the support of Catholic education;

Implement a process of school improvement planning in collaboration with Superintendent;

Develop systems for regularly evaluating programs and/or projects for the purpose of assessing effectiveness, fidelity of implementation, and operational efficiency;

Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education in the initiation of professional development activities for District teachers and administrators;

Supervise and evaluate the secondary principals; coordinate professional staff evaluations (designing a program with the Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education);

Perform personnel functions for the purpose of maintaining adequate staffing, enhancing productivity of personnel and achieving objectives within budget;

Lead the hiring process for secondary professional and support personnel and makes recommendations for selection and assignment to the Superintendent of Schools,

Facilitate meetings, workshops, seminars, etc. (e.g., school improvement planning, school-based budgeting and financial procedures; new Diocesan/Catholic School Office procedures, etc.);

Develop system for ensuring that school leadership is present at evening/weekend events and activities;

Attend Catholic School Board meetings as needed;

Adhere to Catholic teachings and values and comply with the Diocesan Code of Ministerial Conduct;

Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Qualifications:

Candidates with substantial leadership experience in Catholic or non-Catholic school settings who are able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge necessary to serve as the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Schools will be considered.  Candidates must be and remain practicing Catholics in good standing.

It is preferred that candidates have significant experience as an administrator at the secondary school level.  It is expected that the Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools will possess at least a Master’s Degree or its equivalent. However, all candidates will be considered regardless of educational background.

In addition, the successful candidate will also have many of the following professional and personal qualifications:

  • Collaborative leadership style along with an ability to act decisively;
  • Ability to promote positive staff morale and to work independently;
  • Evidence of success in working with different stakeholder groups to advance a positive change agenda;
  • Experience with budgeting;
  • Assist Catholic Schools Office staff with branding and marketing of secondary Catholic education;
  • Ability to recruit and motivate talented people in professional and volunteer roles;
  • Commitment, energy, and capacity to successfully manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to develop partnerships with constituencies within the community and beyond;

The successful candidate is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with school staff, consultants, volunteers, collaborators, co-workers, and funders; and to work respectfully with Catholic School Office and Chancery colleagues.
