LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED
Literary Braille Certification
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Minimum of 1 year of experience with Braille translation
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES REQUIRED
• Ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions, both oral and written
• Excellent organizational skills
• Excellent keyboarding skills
• Proficiency in the use of software packages related to office operations
QUALIFICATIONS
• High school diploma
• Minimum of 1 year of experience with Braille translation
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS
The work environment characteristics and physical demands described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Work is performed in classrooms, offices, work stations and meeting rooms.
The position requires occasional walking, standing, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting/carrying work related items weighing less than 40 pounds, such as books, papers and presentation materials. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Attendance at conferences and professional development is required. Work involves everyday risks and discomforts which require normal safety precautions when operating equipment or performing job duties. May work prolonged or irregular hours and must be able to maintain emotional control under stress.
JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY
Support instruction by performing a variety of Braille translation and transcribing activities for visually impaired students.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
May be required to perform other related duties as assigned.
General Office Duties
• Maintain accurate records of all transcriptions
• Maintain log of materials ordered and maintained
• Initiate repair process of Vision Services' equipment
• Maintain inventory for VI department, including library of braille (tactual) materials and equipment
• Maintain properly labeled file on all materials, which should be retained for future use
• Maintain a resource file for locating alternative sources of braille materials
Compliance
• Maintain confidentiality
• Attend workshops/seminars for continuous upgrading of services and equipment
• Remain current in computer technology as it relates to braille production
Teacher Support
• Carry out braille formatting for literary, foreign language, and Nemeth code rules, except when modifications are requested by VI teacher to accommodate braille reading ability of individual students
• Provide braille embossed materials as determined by the VI teacher
• Assist with delivery of braille (or other tactual) materials to the appropriate schools
• Coordinate with VI teachers to prepare transcribed materials during the summer
• Help with activities for the ongoing maintenance of the program for students with visual impairments
• Manage time so as to complete transcriptions as they are needed by VI teacher
