SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The principal is the instructional leader who manages programs, personnel and facilities in order to develop an optimum learning climate for the unique needs of the local school.  The principal provides the leadership in the evaluation of the strengths and programmatic needs of the school in relation to the local, state, and national goals.   An essential element of the principal's role is the effective communication of the school's purpose, objectives, and progress to the local community and the Jefferson Parish School Board.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Administers, manages and supervises the total operation of the school.

2. Provides instructional leadership at the school center in the development of:

         a. education programs

         b. planning, program, budgetary and evaluation systems

         c. public and school community relations

         d. well-balanced activities program

3. Enforces appropriate Federal Regulations, State Statutes, School Board Policies and administrative directives.

4. Makes judicious pupil and personnel assignments at the local school level.

5. Supervises and evaluates all personnel assigned to the school.

6. Directs the utilization of available services and resources according to clearly established priorities and       needs

7. Supervises spending and maintains accurate records for all school fiscal affairs in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Practices.

8. Supervises, maintains and updates an inventory of all property and equipment assigned to the school.

9. Develops and implements a comprehensive plan of staff development.

10. Provides communication linkage among the central offices, and all school personnel, regional offices, parents, community, and citizen groups, and remains knowledgeable of their activities and concerns.

11. Maintains appropriate and accurate data on all students and school personnel in order to remain compliant with local, state, and federal requirements.

12. Provides leadership for the development and management of a comprehensive program of student services and have a well-balanced student activities program.

13. Provides administrative management and supervises the maintenance of a clean, well-maintained campus.

14. Maintains a safe, orderly campus for students and adults.

15. Establishes and maintains a positive school climate.

16. Directs, coordinates, and participates in the development of the School Improvement Plan; supervises the implementation of the School improvement Plan and makes adjustments when needed.

17. Holds all students and adults accountable for treating others with dignity and respect.

18. Models non-discriminatory behavior toward all students and adults.

19. Facilitates the school’s growth target as defined by the state’s accountability program or shows progress in reaching that target.

20. Is fully knowledgeable about instruction, testing, and accountability and serves as the instructional leader of the school.

21. For high school principal: has working knowledge in the operation/use of the student data of the student data information system. For elementary and middle school principals: is skilled in the operation/use of the student data information system.

22. Conducts meaningful evaluation of staff and faculty which lead to supportive and directed professional development.

23. Performs all other duties assigned by those who serve in a supervisory capacity over principals.

                                                                                                                

WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED:

The certified administrator in the capacity of principal is required to work in an office type setting, climate controlled environment adhering to School Board energy policy.  Work day consists of eight hours per day including one hour lunch.  Must sometimes work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by job responsibilities and supervisor and attend meetings in various locations.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

A certified administrator serving in the capacity of principal must be able to communicate in standard English both orally and in writing.  Communication must be commensurate with age and skill of listener.  Must have ability to accurately give and receive information via electronic and tele-communication systems.  Must be able to communicate successfully and pleasantly with the faculty, staff and public.  Must be able to accurately compile, access and analyze data, summarize information and provide written report to supervisor.  Must have ability to represent school system at various public functions.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Telephone, micro computer, facsimile machine, calculator, copy machine, printers, folding machines, intercom, public address system, security alarm system, and other appropriate electronic and office machines.

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

Sitting, standing, walking, running, observing and monitoring student behavior in all facets of the school environment is required during the work day.  Must be able to operate office equipment.  Reaching, bending, lifting 10 pounds is sometimes required as well as the physical restraint of another person or persons.  Ability to provide own transportation to school(s),  work locations and meeting sites.  Mobility skills necessary to access a variety of work locations.

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:

Must understand and interpret written and verbal instructions from supervisor and must be cognizant of and consistent in implementing the Jefferson Parish Public School System policies and procedures governing discipline and student services.

HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:

Must be able to work compatibly in group settings.  Must serve as a resource to administrators, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community.  Must be able to respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master's Degree or higher with Louisiana Certification in Administration and Supervision on level of                   assignment (Principalship Certificate)

2. Three (3) years of successful teaching experience

3. Teaching experience at level assigned

4. Demonstrated ability to work with various groups

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Doctorate Degree, evidence of preparation for school program administration, and successful school administrative experience.
