JOB ANNOUNCEMENT – FOR 2018/19 SCHOOL YEAR

Children’s Community School is a small, urban, progressive elementary school (K-6th grade) located in Van Nuys.  Grounded in the philosophy of American educator John Dewey, the school utilizes a social studies core curriculum utilizing experiential learning, hand-on materials, including block building and woodwork, field trips for research and a rich arts and music program. CCS has a strong commitment to diversity and a student population of about 120. Class size is 20, with a student/teacher ratio of approximately 10:1.  Salaries and benefits are competitive.

Position:  Assistant Teacher

ASSISTANT TEACHERS are part of the CCS teaching team and assume a variety of educational and support responsibilities.  Working under the supervision of mentor teachers Assistant Teachers play a vital role in the educational process at CCS.  In addition to working with mentor teachers in the classroom, flexible scheduling allows Assistant Teachers to assume specific teaching duties, work one-on-one with individual students, and supervise and provide leadership in small group activities.  Assistant Teachers participate in weekly staff meetings at which planning and curricular implementation issues are discussed and resolved. They play an active role in the life of the school and interact daily with parents.  The position of Assistant Teacher is an entry-level teaching post at CCS, one in which skills and experience are cultivated, refined, and strengthened, with opportunities for professional development.  Most of the present CCS teaching staff began their careers at the school as Assistant Teachers.

Experience:  The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to a career as a teacher and will be credentialed or enrolled in a teaching credential program.  Experience with young children in educational and counseling environments, after school programs, and/or camp settings is highly desirable.  Work experience in a progressive school is an asset.  All candidates should have an interest in learning about progressive pedagogy and practice.
