Teacher - Learning Specialist

All staff members at the Open School are expected to accept the values and beliefs of open education and model those values for students. The staff works together with students and parents to provide an environment that fosters the development of the whole person, personally by developing a strong sense of self, socially by developing and maintaining healthy relationships, and intellectually by learning to think and apply knowledge. Teachers at the Open School act as advisers and facilitators in the learning process.

Staff members must be able to respond to the needs of students and, be capable of creating learning experiences and activities to meet those needs. They must be able to support the learning of students with widely differing abilities, backgrounds, interests, developmental levels and learning styles in an interdisciplinary, experiential, holistic manner. Desirable characteristics include flexibility, ability to communicate effectively with staff, parents, and students, and willingness to take risks. Staff are expected to model lifelong learning.

All staff members are expected to share leadership and responsibility for decision-making, planning and tasks related to the total P-12 school program. Each is an active participant in team meetings, elementary level meetings, and all-staff meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered for employment, the candidate must have:

  • Current Colorado license in Special Education, with additional endorsement in other content area/s preferred.
  • Expertise in academic assessment.
  • Expertise in student/teacher/classroom observation.
  • Experience in supporting students with unique academic, emotional, and social needs.
  • Ability to work with students, staff and parents in a variety of group and individual settings.
  • Expertise in effective, useful IEP preparation and implementation, utilizing the Enrich program
  • Expertise in supporting literacy and mathematics needs for special needs students.
  • Training and expertise to provide specialized intensive reading and mathematics intervention.
  • Experience in an alternative educational setting preferred.
  • Outstanding counseling / facilitation / intervention presentation skills related to individuals, groups and classrooms.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Support staff and students (K-6) within inclusion model: accommodations, behavior plans, providing resources, alternative settings, etc.
  • Communicate with parents, students and teachers concerning student progress.
  • Develop and implement Individual Educational Plans with teachers, students, and parents.
  • Skill in computerized instruction for reading, writing and math.
  • Small group instruction in literacy and mathematics.
  • Completes paperwork in a reasonable and meaningful way, as well as complies with the law.

TEAM MEMBER:

  • Function as a special education teacher of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Share responsibility as special education teacher for assigned caseload.
  • Work closely with elementary staff members, consulting weekly and coordinating services to meet the needs of students.
  • Consult with secondary special education personnel and counselors as part of K-12 program.
  • Participate in district wide requirements and training opportunities.
  • Act as liaison with outside agencies.
  • Provide training opportunities for staff.
  • Be a member of elementary Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS).

STAFF MEMBER:

  • Attend level and all school staff meetings.
  • Participate equitably in shared decision-making committees and other all-school committees.
  • Participate in all-school and/or elementary events.

SUMMARY:
Develop, implement, and support individualized practices for achieving learning outcomes for students with communication, cognitive, physical, and/or social/behavioral needs, based on the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA). This teacher will utilize evidence-based best practice and rely on frequent progress monitoring for programming adjustments. The Learning Specialist teacher will take a leadership role in collaboratively problem solving interventions for students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Design and implement specialized instruction in one-on-one, small group and large classroom settings.

Work collaboratively to plan and modify curriculum, team teach with general educators and to communicate the abilities and needs of special education students.

Develop, implement and review for appropriateness the behavioral plans for designated students.

Work in conjunction with a multidisciplinary team to conduct IEP and referral meetings, conferences, and to develop a multidisciplinary approach to the educational enhancement of the student.

Maintain ongoing communication with regular educators, school staff, students and parents.

Create a safe supportive and understanding environment for disabled students.

Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Must hold a valid Colorado SPED generalist endorsement. If teacher is the teacher of record for a specific content area, the must meet content-area qualification, which could include the appropriate content endorsement, degree in the content area, Colorado State Board of Education-approved content exam, or 36 credit hours as determined by the district. Training emphasis in Learning Disabled/Perceptual Communicative preferred.

EXPERIENCE Experience/supervised internship in working with educationally disabled children. Training in understanding/interpreting educational assessments and prescriptive teaching. Demonstrated ability to collaboratively work with a multidisciplinary team in developing appropriate materials, facilitating inclusion, creating educational plans, and designing and implementing behavioral plans. Training and experience in working with students with a variety of, disabling conditions.
Complies with the Special Education Department and district policies and procedures (e.g., Medicaid billing, accident reporting).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Normal routine levels of activity related to bending, carrying, climbing, hearing, reaching, sitting, standing, vision and walking, and may also involve above-average levels of activity at times that can not always be anticipated. Ability to meet physical needs of students.
