SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The Writing Specialist will plan and carry out activities within the Future Center. This is a 10 month certified position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provides students the opportunity to improve their writing skills by overseeing the development and delivery of effective tutoring programs, increasing the awareness of the services of the Future Center, evaluating the effectiveness of the writing support efforts, and improving writing outcomes of the students served by the writing services
  • Assures effective writing support for students by selecting, training, scheduling, and volunteers, planning and implementing training and professional development opportunities for volunteers, reviewing and selecting tutoring materials, expanding the selection of writing resources available online to students, maintaining equipment in good condition, and maintaining supplies for the writing area
  • Increases the reach of the Future Center by preparing informational materials about center services for distribution on campus and communicating regularly with academic administrators and staff about the Future Center's services
  • Performs and coordinates scheduling tasks and support services associated with the writing component of the Future Center
  • Supports the initiatives and goals of the Future Center
  • Assist in academic year scheduling of walk-in hours, standing appointments, seminars, and classroom utilization for the writing component of the Future Center
  • Coordinate volunteer writing consultants and ensure volunteers have passed required background checks through HR and have required trainings
  • Enables enrolled students to fulfill course requirements by providing assistance within the writing center with punctuation, grammar, and language mechanics, as well as providing research information and direction needed to compile documentation by introducing report styles, footnotes, endnotes, citing sources, and explaining plagiarism, etc.
  • Ensures access to students by scheduling, announcing, and maintaining regular office hours
  • Works closely with teachers, support staff and Future Center staff
  • Coordinates with the Future Center College and Career Readiness Coordinator to recruit and schedule qualified volunteers to assist students in the area of writing as part of the Future Center
  • Designs and maintains volunteer training materials and forms, conducts training prior to volunteers working in the Future Center to support the writing component
  • Coordinates writing support usage
  • Manages data collection for activities, including writing component of the Future Center attendance and usage
  • Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds
  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, participating in professional organizations.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the Future Center by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Maintains a positive, energetic, solution driven demeanor in all interactions with students and staff.
  • Compiles and completes data and reports on the effectiveness of the writing program.
  • Maintain/schedule for orientation/advising/special projects/programs/events within the writing center
  • Performs any other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree required CERITIFCATES, LICENSES, and REGISTRATIONS: Must hold valid Indiana State Teacher's License. Preferred in Secondary ELA with a demonstrated background in teaching writing.

EXPERIENCE: Extensive training in and knowledge of the varied writing instructional techniques - Demonstrated effective teaching and computer skills - Experience with high school students.
