    General Description:

    The position of Teaching Intern ("TI") is a unique opportunity for college students and adults interested in education or a career change to teaching. Over the course of Tindley's summer program, TIs work directly work with middle school students under the supervision of professional teachers.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
    • TIs work directly work with scholar's students under the supervision of professional teachers. TIs generally assist Lead Teachers in teaching core classes, are responsible for leading and assisting in afternoon activities, monitor lunch periods and recess, attend events in the evenings, and write student evaluations at the end of the summer.
    • TIs are also encouraged to attend optional training sessions in early June. Duties and Responsibilities TIs may work closely with assigned Lead Teachers in the daily planning and implementing of lesson plans in morning academic classes (Math, Science, Humanities, etc..).
    • This may involve assisting small groups of students, correcting homework, occasionally leading lessons, preparing materials, and other teaching related duties.
    • More experienced TIs may also lead morning academic core classes with the aid of another TI. The TI would be responsible for lesson planning and implementation, classroom management and creating an effective team teaching environment with the other TI or TA.
    • TIs co-lead advising groups, working to create a positive environment for sharing issues during the five-week program.
    • TIs are required to complete a number of end-of-summer student evaluations pertaining to students they have come in contact with over the summer.
    • TIs assist and lead in afternoon activities and sports offerings. This includes planning, leading and securing materials needed to conduct these activities. Qualifications
    • TI positions are full time over the program six weeks. TIs are expected to work during the program hours of 8:00a to 3:30p, plus during faculty meetings and special events.

    Experience and Skills:

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Competency in the areas of content knowledge, content pedagogy, general teaching knowledge, and knowledge of students; willingness to learn new skills and to enhance instructional skills.
    • Ability to access information and resources, create and critically investigate multiple instructional and curricular strategies, and make decisions that effectively address a variety of student learning styles.
    • Ability to assess the strengths, needs, interests, and aspirations of scholars; willingness to hold high expectations for scholar's academic performance and behavior.
    • Ability to set achievable instructional goals, monitor and evaluate scholar progress.
    • Ability to be resourceful in responding to the changing needs of scholars and the community.
    • Ability to listen, speak, write, read, and respond clearly to scholars, parents and community members.
    • Ability to use a variety of media and technology to enhance communications.
    • Ability to function effectively as part of a teaching team, support peer teachers, plan collaboratively, and work constructively with the teaching team to solve problems that arise.
    • Ability to guide the learning process toward the achievement of stated goals and objectives.
    • Ability to establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects in compliance with the educational/curricular goals.
    • Ability to encourage and implement policies, practices, and procedures which create a positive atmosphere, conducive to learning.
    • Willingness to assist the administration in governing student life in order to maintain a safe environment.


    Training and Experience:
    • Need to be a Junior or Senior in 4-year degree program
    • 4-year degree program must be from an accredited institution.
    • Program in Education or related field preferred.
    • Work experience preferred.
