Teaches course content for Urban Farming and Plant and Soil Science and workplace skills to high school students enrolled at the Chesterfield Career and Technical Center@Courthouse.  Work is performed at the professional level within specific instructional program guidelines.

Essential Job Functions:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Plans and delivers appropriate curriculum content to students.
  • Plans, teaches and assesses student work.
  • Assesses students' learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Uses the curriculum of the district to plan daily instructional activities.
  • Maintains order within the classroom setting in accordance with division guidelines regarding student behavior management.
  • Supervises students in non-classroom time (before school, after school, student activities, fire drills).
  • Collaborates with other faculty in planning and delivering instruction to students.
  • Communicates regularly with parents.
  • Ensures compliance with existing applicable federal and state statutes and local policies, regulations and guidelines related to public schools.
  • Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Organizes and facilitates a program advisory committee composed of members from the local plumbing/pipefitting business community, meeting to provide support and guidance on how to enhance the quality of the program.
  • Operate a school bus for transporting students to off-site construction projects and other locations for approved field trips.
  • In association with the school's Workplace Transition program, interacts with local employers to facilitate student employment, develop student work plans that relate to the curriculum and meet employer needs, and evaluate students at their job sites, utilizing employer feedback on each working student's job performance.
  • Serves as a sponsor for Future Farmers of American (FFA), which includes fundraising activities, setting up and running skills contests, and accompanying and supervising students at youth organization activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Considerable knowledge of:  operating a business; Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA) standards and procedures; growing patterns and planting of a wide variety of plants, including edibles; plant maintenance; farm animals; mathematical computations related to planting and planning large scale gardens.  Knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of instruction as well as general knowledge of academic curriculum for assigned classes.  Demonstrated ability to develop instructional goals to design and deliver instruction and to assess students' learning.  Demonstrated ability to communicate with others effectively, both orally and in writing.  Demonstrated ability in decision making, problem analysis, conflict resolution, interpersonal relationships, and planning.

Requirements:
  • Minimum of 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accepted institution.
  • Possession of the requirements for the applicable teacher license.
  • Must have or be eligible for Virginia Collegiate Professional or endorsed in Agriculture.
  • Commercial Driver's License; good driving record; Defensive Driving Course; meets physical qualifications for school bus drivers; successful completion of state-approved school bus driver training course.  This position requires the incumbent to drive. In accordance with Policy 5431, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned a district-owned or leased motor vehicle must hold a Valid Virginia Driver's License and will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy.

References

To complete their application, applicants must submit two (2) written  references . When possible,  references  should be from a current or previous supervisor.  References  from a supervising teacher or professor are acceptable when there is no relevant prior work history.
