**THIS IS A SUMMER SCHOOL POSITION. EMPLOYMENT IS SEASONAL AND TEMPORARY**

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The Office of English Learners 5-Week Academic Enrichment program focuses on grade level academic skills in Math and ESL/English Language Arts. Cognitively demanding tasks and grade-level complex texts will be made accessible for our students. In addition to academics, the program includes enrichment activities focused on STEM, Arts, Leadership Building, and Physical Fitness. The program serves EL students entering 1 st -12 th grades.

POSITION SUMMARY:
This is a summer program coordinated by OEL in order to support EL acceleration in English language acquisition and development. Coordinators hired are expected to adhere to the vision and mission of OEL, which is to provide a culturally and linguistically responsive education with the supports needed to ensure equitable access to opportunities that promote language acquisition, bilingualism, biliteracy and lifelong learning.

Site Coordinators will supervise, guide, assist, and facilitate all classroom responsibilities including the learning environment, lesson plan implementation, assessment, classroom management, parent communication, and classroom observations.

For example, if the site operates from 8:00am-2:00pm, the coordinator will work from 7:30 AM to 2:30 PM with additional pre-planning, Monday to Friday, beginning on Monday July 9 th , 2018 and ending on Friday August 10 th , 2018. Job responsibilities will require additional time for site prep, data entry, data analysis, and communications to families

EL Summer Learning Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:

Pre-Planning
  • Participate in the program planning process prior to the start of the program and assist with staff selection process and events.
  • Develop and submit daily schedules for their sites utilizing the operational systems put in place by the Office of English Learners.
  • Collaborate with OEL to identify newly enrolled students for iReady account set up
During Program
  • Develop strong relationships and work collaboratively with school administration, summer school staff and parents
  • Serve as the Summer School's liaison with OEL in Central Office.
  • Be responsible for the implementation of the OEL program model by building a strong team, ensuring positive outcomes and a high quality experience for the scholars.
  • Ensure a safe learning environment by following procedures in accordance with the district's Code of Conduct protocol and safety procedures as outlined in the Superintendent's newsletter and other applicable policies.
  • Manage student attendance, grades, and progress reports, parent contact and student discipline.
  • Supervise administration of iReady assessment to all enrolled students
  • Schedule and coordinate summer formative and summative assessments.
  • Oversee the use of data driven instruction utilizing formative assessments.
  • Review lesson plans and create 'best practice' instructional strategies.
  • Implement and maintain a positive behavior management system that is clear and aligns with program goals.
  • Ensure that all curriculum and supplies are received, distributed and maintained throughout the program.
  • Be prepared to substitute or provide adequate coverage during a teacher's and/or teacher assistant's absence.
  • Coordinate logistics related to field trips if applicable.
  • Maintain confidentiality of co-workers, students and families.
  • Supervise common areas (breakfast, lunches, hallways, transitions) daily.
  • Facilitate fifteen-minute briefing/check-in sessions each morning with staff.
  • Coordinate the end of program cultivating activity with artifacts such as presentations, art with written summary of purposes.
After program
  • Ensure that all relevant information about students are returned to the OEL in Central Office.
  • Coordinate cleanup of site and shutting down of program.
Program Opportunities:
The Elementary ESL Summer Academy will begin on Monday July 9 th, , 2018 and is subject to end on Thursday August 9th, 2018. The program hours vary according to locations and grade levels being served. Please keep in mind that all site coordinators, teachers, and paras are required to report for work on Friday, August 10th to clean up, gather and pack materials, and support with inventory and delivery of summer materials to storage site.

REPORTS TO: Position reports to the Project Manager of the Office of English Learners.

Summer Learning Academy Site Coordinators are required to attend all scheduled central and site-based planning meetings, trainings and professional development sessions, work all required program hours, as well as complete all required wrap up duties, as indicated in site-specific job description.
  • Wednesday, May 2, 2018 - 4:30-7:30pm: Site Manager Training
  • Saturday, May 19, 2018 - 8am-2pm: All Staff Training
  • Site Coordinator hours and site-based PD are specific to site. Contact program leaders for details.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Oversee BPS Summer Learning planning and programming at a specific program site. Supervise teachers, paraprofessionals, and other program staff, serve as site lead for instructional support, and oversee operational management for programming. Work to:
  • Stem summer learning loss and increase academic achievement
  • Develop student socio-emotional skills and increase student efficacy by building skills and competencies
  • Promote student health and wellness.

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Provide leadership and management at one program site
  • Participate in the hiring of teachers, paraprofessionals and support staff
  • Support efforts to recruit, enroll and engage students in the Summer Learning Academy
  • Participate in development of program schedule in advance of summer
  • Supervise instruction, services and the monitoring of student progress; oversee any performance task or assessment administered to students
  • Support high-quality instruction by facilitating professional development and curriculum planning sessions, modeling instructional practices, and observing instruction and providing feedback
  • Prepare and m anage curriculum materials, including pre-program set up and materials inventory after conclusion of programming
  • Engage and collaborate with families as partners in planning and problem solving
  • Establish a culturally competent, trauma sensitive learning climate
  • Manage student data systems (e.g. attendance, schedules, etc.)
  • Track work of BPS teachers and paraprofessionals, complete time reporting forms for payroll; arrange for coverage in the event of teaching staff absence
  • Execute and enforce site policies and student discipline code
  • Coordinate emergency response procedures in the event of emergency
  • Work with other site staff to monitor quality of programming to ensure outcome goals are on track to be met. Implement evaluation protocols - surveys, tests, etc.
  • Collaborate with BPS, BASB, NIOST, and other evaluators to implement evaluation tools
  • Demonstrate completion of other critical tasks and duties as requested by Office of Expanded Learning Time.

TERMS:
  • Compensation is set based on hours of work, including professional development, on-site program time, and additional duties. Compensation differs based on Summer Learning Academy program.
  • Site-specific job requirements, program hours, and training schedule to be determined by Summer Learning Academy program. Agreement to site-specific terms is required for hire.
    • Payroll will be processed on a biweekly basis after receipt of completed timesheets in accordance with BPS summer payroll schedule.

  • All employees must read and agree to the BPS 2018 Summer Program Terms of Employment

QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree
  • License: ESL License and/or SEI Endorsement
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience working with English Learners and/or Students with Interrupted Formal Education.
  • Preferred prior experience as an After School or Summer Site leader.
  • Authorization: Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

The successful candidate will have at least two years of experience in working with EL students, excellent classroom management skills, and the ability to work proactively with the Site Program Coordinator. This teacher will provide a learning environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and cultural development to the child.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Current teacher or administrator in the Boston Public Schools.
  • ESL License and/or SEI Endorsement
  • Prior experience working in a BPS summer learning program and/or in close collaboration with a community-based organization
  • Technology-savvy

BPS is particularly interested in candidates who are fluent in one of BPS' official languages:Spanish, Creole (Cape Verdean), Creole (Haitian), Chinese, Vietnamese, Portuguese, & Somali.
