JOB TITLE : Piano Technician

REPORTS TO: Coordinator, Music and Dance

GRADE : 08 (Full time; 12 months)

Starting Salary : $20.79 to $29.10 per hour, per the ESPBC - Education Support Professionals of Baltimore County pay scale, effective July 1, 2017

DEFINITION : Performs highly skilled work in the maintenance and repair of acoustic pianos, digital pianos, and keyboards. The work involves the routine repair and preventative maintenance of pianos, testing, repair, and/or replacement of defective electronic parts/components; and for demonstrating to school staff the proper operation, handling, and care of pianos and other musical equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :

  • Schedules system-wide maintenance program for all pianos to ensure that each piano is tuned/serviced at least once a year.
  • Performs routine servicing, repairs and/or preventative maintenance on both acoustic and digital pianos at school locations.
  • Maintains an accurate electronic tuning and repair record of all equipment.
  • Orders, stocks, and maintains an inventory of parts and supplies for pianos and keyboards.
  • Facilitates transfer of pianos and other music equipment as necessary.
  • Evaluates instrument needs and makes recommendations for new purchases.
  • Develops bid specifications for acoustic and digital pianos and related equipment. Secures quotes for equipment and makes recommendations to the Coordinator, Music and Dance Education.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationship with employees and vendors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education, Training, and Experience :
  • High school diploma or appropriate equivalent. T
  • Two (2) years of recent work experience in the repair, servicing, tuning, and preventative maintenance of acoustic pianos.


Licenses and Certificates:
  • Possession of a valid Class C Maryland driver's license, or appropriate equivalent required.
  • Registered Piano Technician (RPT) designation preferred.

Required license and certification must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

Note: Other combination of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and techniques utilized in piano tuning and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of proper use and care of piano tuning and repair tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess the condition of pianos and use appropriate tools to tune, repair, and rebuild pianos.
  • Ability to determine tonal quality and accurate pitch in order to analyze faults and take corrective action.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and administer system-wide maintenance of pianos and keyboards.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work closely with the supervisor, teachers, students, and other staff.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated disposition to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or Power Point).


PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
Work is performed in a shop environment, sitting, standing, bending or stooping, and lifting weights up to 100 pounds. Work involves occasional exposure to dangerous machinery. Must maintain reliable transportation and/or ability to travel to schools.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Full-time; 12 months
May be required to work evenings and/or weekends for special events.

FLSA STATUS : Non-Exempt

Eligible for membership in the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System.

Citizenship, residency or work VISA in United States required.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $81.00. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to hire.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
  • All newly hired personnel must attend a Badges and Benefits session.
  • Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
