Position Summary:

The Emotional Support Special Education Teacher shows an unwavering commitment to students with emotional support needs and a commitment to improve the knowledge, skills, and lives of each of these students. The teacher ensures that students meet success in their classroom as measured by achievement on IEP goals and other classroom assessments.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Serving as the lead teacher for an emotional support classroom of 8-12 students

Establishing a positive, fun, structured, achievement focused classroom

Driving student achievement for students with emotional support needs in their class

Providing instruction to students with emotional support needs

Working together with other staff members to implement each student's IEP

Monitoring and responding to progress monitoring results and student assessment data

Developing effective IEPs that drive the academic program and translate into measurable results for students

Collaborating with related services providers to implement strategies to increase student achievement on specialist IEP goals

Communicating regularly with parents about student's progress and needs

Providing leadership as a member of the Special Education team

Qualifications:

Strong knowledge of instructional strategies for students with emotional support needs

Familiarity with functional behavioral assessments and positive behavior support plans

Detail-oriented and highly organized with strong analytical writing skills

Has experienced a high level of measurable success working with urban youth

Has knowledge of PA Academic Standards

Results-oriented individual - a flexible thinker willing to do "whatever it takes."

A ferocious desire to provide our students with a world class education

Has zest and a sense of humor

Willingness to be an active partner and collaborator with staff from an outside organization in order to implement a structured program model based on teaching social and emotional skills

Ability to work well as a member of a classroom and school team

Belief in the primary importance of teacher-student relationships. Strong ability to build trusting relationships with students

Ability to provide high quality instruction in several subject areas: reading/literature, math, science, and social studies

Requires a candidate who is calm, present, predictable, and will not become escalated in response to challenging behavior from students

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred

Requires special education certification

Background in teaching students with ED classifications, either as a lead or co-teacher

Experience working with special education population in an urban classroom setting

Documented experience using data-driven instruction to achieve significant student gains

Physical Requirements:

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required such as maneuvering in classrooms and physically supporting students in the classroom; Standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, speak loudly and clearly, seeing and hearing things both near and far away, stooping, kneeling, fine finger and hand manipulation in use of a computer, chalkboard, dry erase board or projector.
