Anticipated 2018 - 2019 position
Position Title: Special Education Teacher – Therapeutic Learning Program, (TLP)
FLSA: Exempt
Reports to: Building Principal and the Director of Special Education
Terms of Employment: 184 day work year. Benefits and salary in accordance with the LEA Unit A collective bargaining agreement
Responsibilities:
- Supports regular educator by modifying curriculum for students eligible for special education, using the course of study adopted by the MA DESE.
- Works to ensure the rights of students with disabilities to be full participants in the general curriculum.
- Implements state and federal laws and regulations as they apply to special education.
- Participates in the development of and oversees implementation of IEPs for students eligible for special education.
- Supervises and supports paraprofessionals as they implement instruction, including behavior plans.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a supportive learning environment in the classroom.
- Evaluates and maintains data on pupils' academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
- Communicates with parents regularly through conferences and other means to discuss pupil's progress and interpret the school program.
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
- Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities as assigned during the working day.
- Administers standardized tests in accordance with district testing program and to determine special education eligibility.
- Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications:
- Must have MA DESE Moderate or Severe Disabilities license at the middle school level
- Must have experience working with students with social emotional and/or behavioral disabilities; must have experience managing student behavior including developing behavior plans, collecting data and other tasks associated with this requirement
- Must have excellent communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills and possess a high level of capability with technology.
- Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property, assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy
