    Position Title: Library Media Specialist

    FLSA: Exempt

    Reports to: Building Principal

    Terms of Employment: 184 day work year. Benefits and salary in accordance with the LEA Unit A collective bargaining agreement.

    Responsibilities:
    • Creates an environment that is conducive to active and participatory learning, resource-based instructional practices, and collaboration with teaching staff
    • Maintains a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, and conducive to student learning
    • Collaborates with teachers and students to design and teach engaging inquiry and learning experiences and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking
    • Participates in the implementation of collaboratively planned learning experiences by providing group and individual instruction, assessing student progress, and evaluating activities
    • Develops and maintainsa collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school community
    • Cooperates with other libraries and librarians to provide access to resources outside the school
    • Evaluates, promotes, and uses existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning, supplement school resources, connect the school with the global learning community, communicate with students and teachers, and provide 24/7 access to library services
    • Understands copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assists users with their understanding and observance of the same
    • Organizes and maintains the collection for effective use
    • Remains current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs
    • Supervises volunteers, resources, and facilities effectively
    • Uses evidence of practice to support program goals and planning
    • Collects and evaluates data to inform continuous program improvement
    • Follows departmental processes and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing, etc. that assure that appropriate resources are available when needed
    • Plans and implements meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning
    • Instructs assigned classes and arranges for flexible scheduling to provide accessibility to resources as needed
    • Maintains accurate library budget
    • Participates in K-12 departmental activities, including meetings and workshops
    • Attends staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required
    • Other duties as assigned

    Job Qualifications & Physical Demands:

    Must be highly qualified by DESE licensure standards. Must be certified as a Library Media Specialist (All Levels)

    Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and possess a high level of capability with technology.

    Must be able to assist in the protection of students and school property, assist the principal in fire and other emergency drills as required by law and School Committee policy.
