Volusia County School District is currently seeking motivated teachers certified in Exceptional Student Education (Special Education) K-12.  Instructional candidates will be focused on the implementation of the Florida Standards, academic achievement and the district-wide efforts of student engagement.  Our schools and climate are always warm and friendly. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Holds or is eligible to hold a valid Florida Educator Certificate in an Exceptional Student Education related field
  • Eligible to attend the district approved crisis management program, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NCI) within probation period
  • Hold or is eligible to hold a Certified Addiction Prevention Professional (C.A.P.P.) preferred, or Certified Addiction Professional (C.A.P.) through the Florida Certification Board within a two (2) year period from initial date of employment
  • Experience in coordinating professional development related to performance responsibilities

 REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with school and district staff, students, parents, and community agency personnel to accomplish the required task (FAC 6B-5.011)
  • Strong skills in planning, organization, decision making and task completion to perform required tasks with sufficient intellectual ability (FAC 6B-5.011)
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in handling problem situations with competence in human and interpersonal relations skills (FAC 6B-5.010)
  • Strong working and continuing knowledge/ understanding of alcohol/drug laws as well as school laws, and policies
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive and confidential information
  • Demonstrates competence in administrative and supervisory requirements (FAC 6B-5.003)
  • Expertise in current instructional initiatives and procedures (Community-Referenced Curriculum, Direct Instruction, Social Skills Curriculum, Proactive Behavior Management, Precision Teaching, Adaptive/Assistive Technology...)

REPORTS TO: Principal/Administrator

POSITION GOAL:

To work diligently and conscientiously in the role of instructional personnel to help students meet or exceed annual learning goals, to meet or exceed state and local achievement requirements, learning goals, and to master the skills required to graduate from high school prepared for postsecondary education and work (FS 1012.53)

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  •  *Help students master challenging standards and meet all state and local requirements for achievement. (FS 1012.53)
  • *Assist in practicing and enforcing laws, rules and policy regarding the Volusia County Schools Code of Student Conduct, and those of Florida, including the authority to use alternatives. (VCS Code of Student Conduct-208, FAC 6A-1.0404)
  • *Have a strong and continuing knowledge/ understanding of alcohol/drug laws as related to field in order to appropriately consult with school staff and parents regarding substance abuse.
  • *Teach diligently and conscientiously, using prescribed materials and methods, including technology-based instruction. (FS 1012.53)
  • Attend the district approved crisis management program, Non-violent Crisis Intervention training. Note: No medical or therapeutic equipment is to be used for crisis intervention.
  •   *Maintain a valid Florida Educator’s Certificate as required by state law and state board of education regulations. (VCS 410)
  • *Make regular visits to assigned schools to receive referrals and consult with school staff when appropriate.
  • *Keep records and prepare and submit reports required by law, the school board, and/ or the principal/ administrator. (FS 1012.53) (VCS 410)
  • *Maintain accurate records, logs, statistics, and reports for effective communication, documentation, accountability and program evaluation.
  • *Use prescribed and otherwise appropriate materials and methods. (VCS 410)
  • *Meet regularly with designated School Social Worker to discuss assessments, referrals and follow-up activities.
  • *Provide assessment to all referred students at assigned schools.
  • *Conform to all laws/ and all school board, school and division policies and procedures. (VCS 410)
  • *Provide case management and/or group-work services to targeted students.
  • *Develop, monitor and adapt intervention plans for referred students, where appropriate, by working with school staff, students, parents and community agencies.
  • *Coordinate referrals to community substance abuse and mental health programs and provide timely feedback to school.
  • *Contact parents to discuss assessment results and referrals options, when appropriate.
  • *Make home visits to parents of referred students, where appropriate, to discuss at risk behaviors identified with substance abuse and referral options.
  • *Provide follow-up to students and families regarding referrals to substance abuse treatment providers.
  • *Administer prescription medication as assigned and in accordance with law and school board policy. (VCS 211; FS 1006.062)
  • *With school Social Work Department approval, coordinate with guidance counselors to provide educational groups on substance abuse, where appropriate, for referred students.
  • *Develop presentations on substance abuse/intervention for in-service education workshops for school personnel, as needed and requested.
  • *Develop presentations, as requested, for parents or civic groups regarding the Program.
  • *Deliver all keys, records and reports and account for all other assigned school district property to the principal/ administrator at the end of the regular school year or summer school upon transfer or termination of employment, or at any other time as required by the principal/ administrator or the superintendent. (VCS 410)
  • *May contact and make arrangements for his/her own substitute through the District’s current electronic substitute calling system and provided the teacher has prior authorization to do so from the principal, the substitute called is included on the approved substitute teacher list, and in accordance with school board policy. (VCS 407)
  • *Conform to policy regarding sexual harassment, within the contexts of teacher-student, supervisor-subordinate, and between persons of the same employment status. (VCS 509)
  • *Conform to the Code of Ethics of the Education Profession in Florida. (FAC 6B-1.001)
  • *Conform to the Principles of Professional Conduct for the Education Profession in Florida. (FAC 6B-1.006)
  • *Conform to the Volusia County Schools Equity Plan and the tenets of the prohibition of discrimination. (FAC 6A-19.001)
  • *Attend staff meetings and in-service training as needed for job enhancement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Principal/ Administrator, which are not in conflict with law, policy or the contract. (VCS 410)

Repetitive Motions - Substantial and continuous movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Talking - Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken words. Those activities in which detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed accurately, loudly or quickly.

Hearing Acuity - The ability to perceive speech and other environmental sounds at normal loudness levels.

Visual Acuity - The power to see at a level which allows reading of numbers and text, operation of equipment, inspection of machines, etc.

Working Conditions (conditions the worker will be subject in a position)

Indoors & Outdoors - The worker is subject to both environmental conditions.  Activities occur inside and outside.  There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes.  And there is no effective protection form weather conditions such as wind, moisture, sunlight, extreme temperature changes, etc.
