BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Holds Virginia Registered Nurse (RN) License required. Bachelor's degree, or higher, required. B. S. in Nursing preferred, experienced in school or public health nursing preferred.

Holds Virginia Nursing License

The employee frequently is required to stand. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:
The basic function of this position is to provide health screening, counseling referral and follow-up services to students in assigned schools. This position also entails providing information and assistance to faculty and administration in health related matters.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:
All duties and responsibilities are completed according to the guidelines and policies of Prince Williams County Public Schools.

1. Provides individual and/or group health counseling for students and personnel in assigned school(s). Assesses and monitors students with acute or chronic physical and/or mental conditions that affect academic achievement. Provides information regarding health issues to students and staff. Assists with referral to appropriate resources and follow-up of identified physical/mental health problems. Interprets health status or condition of the student to school personnel and family and makes recommendations regarding health status. Consults with school staff regarding treatment procedures required at school. Documents all health related activities, recommendations and follow-up. Maintains confidentiality as mandated by PWCPS regulations and state laws regarding health related matters. Assesses and monitors issues dealing with new morbidity as it relates to the health of students.

2. Provides audiometers, visual and scoliosis screening/ rescreening to identify Deficiencies. Provides audiometric screening and visual screening for all new students and 10th grade students as required by the State. Screens all suspected vision and hearing deficiencies as referred by school staff. Assists the speech therapist with screening of new students. Re-screens possible scoliosis deficiencies. Assists administration with referrals to parents/guardians for evaluation and treatment of suspected deficiencies.Documents all findings, referrals, and follow-ups.

3. Serves as a resource person to students, parents and staff on health issues. Assesses students for the purpose of early detection of symptoms to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Acts as liaison between health department, home and school in reporting and monitoring of communicable disease. Assists the school in providing a safe and healthful environment conducive to wholesome living and effective learning. Assists in interpretation of laws pertaining to school entrance physicals and immunization requirements. Assists with developing, reviewing and implementing emergency procedures. Provides classroom teacher with health education and related issues and makes classroom presentations as requested. Reviews student emergency cards and assists with compiling a master list of confidential medical conditions. Consults with school administration to review medication administration policies and procedures. Provides parents with health information and guidelines as related to individual student.

4. Attends continuing education activities for current information and procedu4res to increase knowledge and skills. Provides training as needed to implement new health procedures.

5. Monitors the supervision of LPNs and clinic attendants in schools where applicable. Teaches and instructs attendant regarding job responsibilities procedures and practices. Reviews clinic records and log books for compliance with guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.
