SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Assist the special education teacher by providing direct instructional support and training to special needs students.
  2. Assist with designing and developing curriculum in reading, English, social studies, and math under direction of the teacher for use in the resource room.
  3. Provide support to teacher regarding individual students and program needs and behavior concerns.
  4. Provide clerical support in the Resource program.
  5. Other duties as related and assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent AND 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits from an accredited college, AA or BA degree, OR pass an academically rigorous assessment.
  2. Must complete Core Competencies within one year if hired into a Paraeducator position (refer to the ESS Collective Bargaining Agreement).
  3. One year of successful work experience and school district experience preferred.
  4. Demonstrated interest in working with students who have disabilities.
  5. Training or experience working with students who have disabilities.
  6. Ability to respond appropriately to aggressive and physical behaviors.
  7. Physically capable of lifting a student if necessary (up to 50 pounds), kneeling, and bending.
  8. Willing to toilet or feed special needs students, if necessary.
  9. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a diverse group of students, teachers, parents, and administrators in a positive, professional, and confidential manner.
  10. Proficiency in basic communication skills, math, english, and social studies and any other areas related to the targeted grade level of the resource students.
  11. Proficiency in basic computer skills.
  12. Ability to utilize soft restraint and de-escalation techniques.
  13. Ability to see, hear, and listen to the teacher and students throughout the classroom or school settings in order to supervise and maintain a safe environment for a diverse group of students.
  14. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  15. Must have access to reliable transportation.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  1. Work Schedule-Days and hours are subject to change depending on program and district needs.
  2. Benefits-Fringe benefits are provided for employees who work at least half-time (20 hours per week) or more in a regular position. Stipends are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement as negotiated.
  3. Association Membership-Pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement between Spokane Public Schools and the Union, a newly-elected employee must either become a member of the association, pay an equivalent representation fee, or based on bona fide religious objections, pay an equivalent amount to a nonreligious charity mutually agreed upon by the employee and the association.
  4. A fingerprint background check is required for all prospective employees prior to start date. A processing fee is payable by payroll deduction.
