Director of HVAC

Position Summary:

Directs, plans, organizes, and develops the overall operations of the HVAC Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards. Ensuring that all guidelines and regulations are followed

Essential Duties:
  • Assists the Executive Director of Operations in the management of the HVAC team, HVAC bond projects, scheduling of man hours, finances, and the preparation of departmental reports.
  • Oversees the planning and scheduling of the HVAC program, including, but not limited to repair, improvement, and construction activities for all district facilities.
  • Acts as a liaison with various city support departments in accomplishing district projects and ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Directs and approves routine and emergency work order requests and projects and procures necessary services and supplies.
  • Prioritizes maintenance and repair projects and resolves scheduling conflicts.
  • Determines whether to utilize outside or in-house resources for completion of work and makes recommendations to leadership
  • Plans and implements departmental initiatives, projects, and work orders.
  • Directs personnel in the completion of work orders, special projects, and inspects completed work to ensure that high standards of workmanship and safety are maintained.
  • Consults with principals and other managers to develop projects in their building or department.
  • Prioritizes maintenance and repair projects and resolves scheduling conflicts.
  • Prepares and manages an annual budget.
  • Manages and reviews service contracts and energy management systems.
  • Maintains necessary records related to departmental initiatives.
  • Maintains records on the value of work performed, individual productivity statistics, and shop manpower utilization.
  • Recommends and implements system wide building procedural issues related to HVAC and general safety concerns.
  • Complies with all PEOHS, OSHA and other governmental regulatory requirements to include radon, lead, asbestos, water control board, EPA, and ADA.
  • Inspects facilities, troubleshoots building problems, and recommends HVAC projects and initiatives to be implemented.
  • Develops a system for ensuring timely responses to after hour emergency HVAC needs.
  • Ensures a timely response to inquiries from the public, contractors, school administration personnel, and governmental agencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Job Specifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required):
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction, or related field
  • Ten (10) or more years' relevant experience in HVAC maintenance or construction management
  • Five (5) years of supervisory experience
  • Contractor License
  • Proficiency with installation and repair on all types commercial air conditioning, heating, boilers, and refrigeration
  • Ability to read blueprints, specifications, and knowledge of building codes and safety regulations
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, multiple projects of varying complexity with tight deadlines, and demanding while continually adapting to changing priorities.
  • Complete understanding and wide application of basic principles, theories, and concepts of all HVAC equipment
  • Ability to systematically gather information from a variety of sources, analyze information, identify implications of data, draw appropriate conclusions, generate viable, alternative solutions to a question or problem, and evaluate the consequences of choosing each alternative.
  • Ability to develop and maintain professional, trusting, positive working relationships with contactors, vendors, staff, and customers
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to convey complex and/or detailed information to multiple individuals/audiences
  • Possession of a valid operator's driver's license and acceptable driving record as determined to meet district motor vehicle insurance coverage requirements.

  • Requires physical work; lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 75 pounds.

  • Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, toxic chemicals bio hazardous materials, dirt dust, fumes, smoke, and/or loud noises.
