The Norwalk Public Schools is conducting a search for the full-time (12-month) position of Chief Academic Officer at Norwalk Public Schools.  The ideal candidate will possess extensive experiences working in a public school district in an administrative position within curriculum and/or instruction or a related area.  The highly qualified candidate can demonstrate:

  • Successful engagement with boards of education, administrators, staff, families and the community;
  • Effective strategic planning for improving and maintaining high academic performance and creating academic equity for all students;

GENERAL SUMMARY
 
Under the direction of the Superintendent of Schools, the Chief Academic Officer will provide vision, leadership, and direction for the District’s academic programs including; instruction, assessment and curriculum development, and develop focus plans for improving student achievement while narrowing the disparities between the highest and lowest performing students.  The Chief Academic Officer will provide oversight for the implementation of the District’s PreK-12 curricula, and deliver highly effective academic programs and services ensuring a culture of high expectations in which every student has equitable access to high quality and culturally relevant instruction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Serve as the District’s leader in curriculum, instruction, and professional development
  • Provide oversight for the development and quality implementation of curriculum across the District
  • Provide direction for strategic planning and systemic implementation of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development
  • Provide oversight and development of school improvement strategies, programs and plans
  • Review and track progress on school performance and student achievement objectives and academic excellence indicators to assure effective deployment of improvement strategies; direct implementation of revised or new strategies as required.
  • Determine and implement the District’s academic priorities; ensure that curricula are aligned to state and national standards
  • Provide oversight for the effective administration of all district assessments including data collection, analysis and generation of reports as required; review assessment tools and analyze performance for effectiveness in improving student achievement.
  • Develop and reinforce strategic leadership programs that deliver highly effective site-based administrators and academic teaching and learning programs of distinction 
  • Ensure equitable access to high-quality professional learning to all educators 
  • Ensure that the district uses the Connecticut Standards for Professional Learning to provide sessions throughout educators’ career continuum that is relevant, individual and collaborative, aimed at positive academic and non-academic outcomes
  • Develop, support and manage in collaboration with the Superintendent, other administrators and the Norwalk Board of Education the annual budgeting and planning process for curriculum and instruction including, textbooks/instructional materials, technology, and professional development
  • Support the principals and teaching staff in correlating state-mandated testing to daily/annual instruction
  • Provide direction for the improvement of student achievement system-wide; develops, organizes and implements models of technical assistance for schools with lower student achievement
  • Conduct special projects as requested; makes presentations to the community
  • Cultivate effective partnerships with racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse families and educators
  • Assume leadership role on the Superintendent’s Senior Management Team to assist with long-range strategic planning, developing system-wide plans, policies, and activities
  • Perform various duties as assigned by the Superintendent
