Human Resources announces an opening for the position of Principal of Key Elementary School, effective July 1, 2018.  This is a twelve-month position, Grade P-17, on the administrative and supervisory salary scale with a salary range of $101,655 to $153,106 (2017-2018 Salary Schedule – If needed, salary will be revised to reflect the 2018-19 salary adjustment once it is finalized).

Francis Scott Key School or Escuela Key (VPI and kindergarten through grade 5) is part of Arlington Public Schools (APS), a system of 22,000 students located directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.  Students in the system come from 124 countries and speak over 90 languages.  The school system is financially strong, with wonderful teachers and staff, and a high level of community support, along with multiple programs to meet individual student needs. 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES – KEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Francis Scott Key School or Escuela Key was one of the pioneers in the United States to establish a two-way Spanish immersion programs.  The immersion program at Key was established in 1986 with a first grade class and to date is internally recognized for its success as an immersion school.  In keeping with the two-way model, each class includes both native Spanish speakers and native English speakers.

Key School – Escuela Key is also an International Spanish Academy with a strong collaborative relationship with the Embassy of Spain.

The mission of Key School-Escuela Key is to teach our students to be biliterate and bilingual in Spanish and English, and to provide rich academic and social experiences that emphasize cooperation, personal integrity, creativity and community to help all of our students reach their full potential.  We celebrate all our diverse cultures and backgrounds with the vision that students can become respectful, responsible, trustworthy and kind members of the school, their community, and the world.  Currently, there are approximately 750 students.


Key School-Escuela Key is committed to collaborating with our families to help each child further develop the concepts and skills necessary to become a contributing member of our school, community, and the world; to integrate instruction, based on biliteracy and bilingualism in Spanish and English, with core academic areas mandated by state and federal entities; to plan and provide opportunities for our families and staff to share cultural heritages and diverse backgrounds in meaningful ways.

The staff at Key believe that bilingualism is a viable and integral part of each student’s educational experience. They believe that all children can learn when offered proper guidance and developmentally appropriate strategies.  They encourage each child to strive for academic excellence by becoming resourceful, creative, critical thinkers who are comfortable taking academic risks.  They contribute to and promote collaboration among their students and colleagues in order to meet effectively the diverse needs of our students and staff.  The staff engages in a cycle of assessment, reflection, and goal setting to support student achievement and to further their own intellectual development.  They possess strong skills for problem-solving on the students’ behalf.  And they interact with families to enrich cultural exchange and to promote a mutual understanding of our students’ strengths and needs.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK

The principal works collaboratively with staff, families and students to set the tone for the school while enhancing the school’s vision and positively communicating that vision to the entire school community.  The principal is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating and directing the instructional program and working with a staff of more than 100 full and part-time employees; including teachers, an assistant principal, guidance counselors, a librarian, an instructional technology coordinator, office personnel, Extended Day staff, custodians and para-professionals. 

A unique feature of this job is the opportunity to provide leadership for a countywide “Option” school which offers instruction in Spanish and English.

  • Participates in, honors and upholds the democratic decision-making philosophy of the school, including a willingness to focus on individual needs of students and openness to staff and parent ideas and concerns.
  • Interacts in a friendly, informal and warm manner with students, staff and parents while emphasizing respect, cooperation and responsibility among the entire school community.
  • Interacts with the FACE (family and community engagement) committee.
  • Encourages students to discover their own talents and challenges while fostering a love for learning.
  • Builds community within the school by encouraging cooperation and collaboration among educational programs within the school.
  • Promotes an open-door policy, and understands the importance of high visibility in the school.
  • Promotes sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic differences while recognizing the value and richness of the diverse school environment. 
  • Takes a proactive approach to implementing a concrete school-wide discipline plan (i.e., PBIS, Responsive classroom) that focuses on a pro-social learning environment with creative approaches to students’ concerns.
  • Helps facilitate communication among staff, students, parents, the school system and the neighborhood community.
  • Selects effective bilingual teaching staff.
  • Keeps informed on current educational practices, teaching methods and techniques, specifically those related to utilization of the whole child approach to learning, bilingual education instruction, language acquisition, inclusion, team teaching and hands-on methods of delivering instruction.
  • Implements policies and procedures and develops the annual School Management Plan for school improvement.
  • Authorizes the use of school facilities for civic activities related to the school program and other rentals.
  • Coordinates with the PTA, confers with parents, directs student activities related to the school program, and addresses community groups on school problems.
  • Approves the expenditure of school funds.
  • Performs related work and other duties as required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Completion of a master's degree in school administration.
  • Extensive or progressively more responsible experience in elementary school teaching and as an elementary school principal or assistant principal or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possession of or eligible for the Postgraduate Professional License issued by the Virginia State Board of Education indicating endorsement for elementary principal, or eligible for the same.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Experience working with students, families and staff from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience working with an Immersion instructional program.
  • Knowledge of supervisory teaching principles, practices and methods related to the delivery of an effective elementary curriculum.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff in planning, organizing, and directing a varied instructional program that recognizes individual learning styles and sets high standards for all students.
  • Ability to foster communication between the school and community.
  • Knowledge of duties and responsibilities for special education and ESOL/HILT programs, including regulations governing implementation of these programs.
  • Functional knowledge of instructional technology.
  • Ability to develop positive strong relationships with community, parents, and subordinates.
  • Ability to support and build on the present Key program and develop a vision of where Key should be five to ten years from now.

SELECTION PROCESS

All selected candidates will be interviewed by the Superintendent and staff, along with an Interview Committee composed of representatives of staff and parents who will provide feedback to the Superintendent.
