SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Sweep and mop floors as needed; move furniture and equipment; dust areas as needed; wash furniture, walls, and fixtures; wash windows; apply floor products; operate cleaning equipment; replace lights; wash trash cans.
  2. Sanitize body contact areas daily: shower (floors and walls), dressing room areas, wrestling mats, training room areas, sinks, toilets, urinals, drinking fountains.
  3. Sweep and wash sidewalks and blacktop; water lawns; spade up dirt around shrubs; chip ice and shovel snow off walks and steps and de-ice hard surface areas.
  4. Willingly follow directions of principal/head custodian/supervisor without supervision while performing your duties up to standard and participate in planning and organizing work schedules.
  5. Responsible for securing building. Perform fire drills and other related crisis plan procedures.
  6. Responsible for the cleaning of boiler for summer inspection.
  7. Climb ladders; up to roof, servicing lights in gym areas, outside flood lights.
  8. Address unacceptable work performance: a. If poor work is observed, record your observation accurately. b. Show the assistant the poor work and how to perform the duty up to standard. c. Observe the assistant perform the task to provide the opportunity for immediate correction.
  9. Difficulty factors greater than Level #3: a. Direct support of larger groups to organize and coordinate activities. b. Monitor and supervise larger custodial staff. These numbers could vary from 1 to 3 or greater, dependent upon circumstances. c. Larger facility. d. Support of larger teaching and administrative staff. e. Direct communications with staff, students, and trades. f. Train staff in leadership skills, safety procedures, proper cleaning methods, and proper use of supplies and equipment.
  10. Perform other duties as requested by supervisor or head custodian.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform the responsibilities listed.
  2. High school diploma or equivalent.
  3. One year's experience in prior Level 2 or higher.
  4. Proven ability to read and comprehend operational instructions and write applicable reports.
  5. Satisfactory overall work record, including attendance and demonstrated dependability, stability, and ability to establish and maintain effective relations with other employees, students, and public.
  6. Present an image appropriate for modeling for students.
  7. Physical ability to lift, stoop, bend, climb ladders, and perform various types of labor in eight-hour shift.
  8. An operational telephone is required at or readily nearby individual's residence for the purpose of immediate contact.
  9. Ability to willingly follow directions of head custodian/principal up to standards without supervision.
  10. Demonstrated ability to relate and work effectively with a diverse group of co-workers and staff in a confidential manner.
  11. Demonstrated skills in written and oral communication.
  12. Third class boiler license.
  13. First aid card.
  14. Leadership skills: Proven ability to supervise/train assistants is required.
  15. Basic computer skills.
  16. Relates positively to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  1. Work Schedule-Days and hours are subject to change depending on program and district needs.
  2. Benefits-Fringe benefits are provided for employees who work at least half-time (20 hours per week) or more in a regular position. Stipends are in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement as negotiated.
  3. Association Membership-Pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement between Spokane Public Schools and the Union, a newly-elected employee must either become a member of the association, pay an equivalent representation fee, or based on bona fide religious objections, pay an equivalent amount to a nonreligious charity mutually agreed upon by the employee and the association.
  4. A fingerprint background check is required for all prospective employees prior to start date. A processing fee is payable by payroll deduction.
