THE TEACHERS WE SEEK
Salem Public Schools (SPS) knows that there is no more important factor in a child's education than a great teacher. We seek educators who are passionate about working with children and who believe in the value of inclusive education and have high standards for student achievement for all of our students regardless of the students' ability levels or language learning needs. We desire staff who understand and respect the racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity of our students, and who have a strong commitment to the Salem community. We serve approximately 4,000 students who speak 34 languages and come from 37 countries. More than 50% of our students identify as Hispanic, African-American, Asian, or multi-racial. More than 60% of our students come from low-income households, and 14% are English language learners.

Salem Public Schools has a strong focus on standards-based instruction and student-centered learning. Key competencies that we look for in our special educators include:
  • Support for all learners. We seek special educators who:
    • have a firm understanding of child development and know how to support struggling learners.
    • demonstrate skill in designing and delivering daily learning experiences that are differentiated and accessible to all learners.
    • understand how to promote academic and social emotional learning
    • understand how use standardized and formative assessments to differentiate instruction.
    • understand how to collect timely and relevant data about students' mastery of content and skill and use this data to develop IEPs.
    • demonstrate a willingness to learn and continually improve their craft.
  • Strong relationships. We seek special educators who are:
    • committed to developing and maintaining strong, positive relationships with students and families. Family engagement is a core value that all members of the Salem Public Schools team prioritize.
    • willing to work as part of a collegial team of educators

QUALIFICATIONS

At a minimum, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts' teaching license for the appropriate content area and grade; SEI Endorsement
  • Have a Bachelor's degree (required) Masters Degree (preferred)
  • Ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Have current authorization to work in the United States

ABOUT THE SALEM TEACHER POOLS
Individuals interested in teaching in the Salem Public Schools in the 2018-2019 school year should apply to the Salem Teacher Pool. By submitting your application to this posting, you will be demonstrating your interest in the Salem Public Schools and to our students. As part of the pool, your application materials will be available to all school leaders who will have openings for the upcoming school year.

Applicants in the pool are reviewed on an ongoing basis by SPS staff and pool candidates may be contacted for a pre-screening interview if there is a fit with a potential vacancy. We advise that you continue to monitor our specific job postings and to also apply to those individual job postings that are of specific interest to you.

We anticipate having teaching and service provider vacancies in 2018-19 in multiple areas, including:
  • Early Elementary (Grades K-2)
  • Upper Elementary (Grades 3-5)
  • Middle School
  • High School

New Teacher Orientation for all first year teachers and all teaching staff new to the Salem Public Schools for the 2018/2019 School Year will be held on August 21st and 22nd, 2018. This is a required commitment of all new teaching staff. Professional Development for all teaching staff (new and returning) will begin on August 28, 2018.
