Job Description

The Boston Public Schools, an urban public school district in the capital city of Massachusetts serving approximately 57,000 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12, seeks organized, detail-oriented and resourceful candidates for the position of Deputy Press Secretary.

This position reports directly to the Director of Communications and will work closely with members of the Communications team. The Communications Office is responsible for developing and overseeing effective communications about our district and its schools with the media, staff, students, families, partners, and the public at large. The ideal candidate should be a self-starter who is able to produce concise, accurate and appropriate messages while meeting tight deadlines. This position will assist with media-related matters, as well as internal and external district communications; manage digital strategy, including producing social media and video content; and coordinate automated messages, both districtwide and to individual school communities, through the BPS' school-notification platform.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

DEPUTY PRESS SECRETARY
  • Assisting Communications team with the drafting of press releases and facilitating of media inquiries and media-related events.
  • Managing BPS social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and other emerging social media platforms), including developing long-term campaigns, generating graphics, and monitoring, updating and responding to daily postings in a timely and professional manner.
  • Coordinating internal and external communications to parents, students, staff, and stakeholders. This includes automated phone calls, letters, emails, and blog posts.
  • Managing the publication of BPS newsletters, including generating editorial content and curating /editing submitted content.
  • Designing (with other specialists) engaging digital media content, including original graphics and videos, for key BPS stakeholders (parents, staff, students, community members, partners, etc.) on social media and other communication channels.
  • Assisting in communication strategy, in collaboration with Director of Communications, Press Secretary and other Communications team members, on future BPS initiatives and upcoming events.
  • Devising systems and mechanisms for tracking social media use by key stakeholders (parents, students, community members, partners, etc.), and then interpreting results for the Communications team and developing strategies for maintaining and expanding BPS social media presence.
  • Monitoring high-profile BPS projects and initiatives, as well as local and national education trends, that have potential influence or impact on the organization's digital presence.
  • Assisting in the management of the BPS website, including updating the district calendar, posting press releases and uploading documents.
  • Serving as member of the Crisis Communications team (as needed).

Required:

  • Demonstrates a sense of urgency in accomplishing objectives
  • Previous exposure to or experience in the education sectors a plus
  • Experience in video editing, photography and photo editing, and graphic design, including knowledge of Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and/or other relevant software
  • Strong digital knowledge, including web, mobile and social media
  • Expert knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and other emerging social media platforms
  • Expert knowledge of social media management tools, such as HootSuite, Buffer, etc.
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of basic HTML and CSS; Experience with a content management system (CSM) is a plus.
  • Strong presentation skills with proven ability to communicate complex and technical concepts to broad-based stakeholder audience
  • Attention to detail and ability to work quickly under tight deadlines
QUALIFICATIONS - REQUIRED :

  • Bachelor's degree in liberal arts, marketing, or education
  • 3 years of experience in a related field
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - the candidate must have such authorization by his or her first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED :
  • Master's degree

TERMS:
Managerial, Tier C; This position subject to the City of Boston residency requirement.
