Announcement of Superintendent Search

 

The School Board of Wythe County Public Schools invites applications and nominations for the position of Superintendent.  The required start date for the person selected is July 1, 2018

The County

Wythe County is approximately 460 square miles with a population of 29,119.  The county is surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains and residents enjoy a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, camping, fishing, horseback riding…all within convenient distance to numerous restaurants, motels, campgrounds and attractions.  Agriculture is a prominent industry in Wythe County, which ranks in the top ten livestock counties in the state.

The Division

The mission of Wythe County Public Schools, in partnership with our community, is to ensure students are empowered with the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenges of the future.

Schools: 3 high schools, 3 middle schools, 6 elementary schools, 1 technology center, and 1 alternative education center.

Total Student Enrollment: 4,000

Total Division Budget: $46,560,000

Full Time Employees: 530

On-Time Graduation Rate: 91.2%

Qualifications

The board has established the following qualifications for the next superintendent of Wythe County Public Schools:  

  • An earned doctorate is preferred
  • Experience as a superintendent is preferred
  • Experience as a central office administrator is preferred
  • Experience as a principal is required
  • Classroom teaching experience is required
  • Residency in the school division is required

Leadership Management Skills – The successful candidate is a decisive leader; visionary; a creative thinker; organized; efficient; and creates an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect with open channels of communication with all stakeholders.

Personal Characteristics – The successful candidate is confident; a good listener, accessible; and enthusiastic.

Board-Superintendent Relations – The successful candidate can lead the board in goal-setting and planning; provided options and recommendations to the Board before accepting Board directives; and understands differences between policy and administration and acts accordingly. 

Staff Relations – The successful candidate knows the law concerning personnel policies and procedures; sets a good example for staff members; and maintains open channels of communication to and from staff.

Community Relations – The successful candidate inspires community confidence; effectively advocates school issues and needs; and relates well to a variety of community groups.

School Finance – The successful candidate will closely supervise budget development and procedures; develops and explains rationale for budget to the Board and local officials; and identifies programs for increased funding and/or budget cuts.

Areas of Expertise – The successful candidate has expertise in curriculum and instruction; budget and finance; and community/media relations.
