SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

Recognized for excellence, Spokane Public Schools is seeking outstanding principal candidates for possible openings at the elementary level. Successful candidates will be part of an educational system focused on developing the skills and talents of all students and staff through rigorous learning experiences, supportive relationships, and relevant real-life applications.

Spokane Public Schools is looking for individuals who are service-oriented, kind and compassionate in their work with others, and continually strive to improve themselves and their practice. To that end, we want candidates who demonstrate the ability to build relationships, be a strong instructional leader, strive for results, manage people and have a deep understanding of organizational management.

This posting will generate a pool of candidates from which we will conduct preliminary screening activities and choose finalists for specific positions as they become available. Openings will be finalized as retirements, resignations, or transfers become known.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Provide leadership, supervision, and evaluation of the instructional program for the school.
  2. Provide and/or facilitate training of staff with regard to the most effective practices which lead to higher student achievement regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status or prior academic achievement.
  3. Analyze and interpret school-level data; work with staff to develop School Improvement Plans that contain strategies to improve student learning.
  4. Record, monitor, and analyze student discipline data. Recognize disproportionality when it exists, and implement effective stategies to address inequities.
  5. Interpret and implement board policies and administrative regulations.
  6. Lead diverse staff, student body, and the community in development and implementation of building-level goals focused on the improvement of student learning.
  7. Lead staff in development and implementation of district and building-level goals relating to cultural competency and student learning.
  8. Set building-level priorities in the context of community and district priorities and student/staff needs.
  9. Establish a school climate which promotes equal opportunities for all students, good conduct, and positive attitudes and values, and accept responsibility for the attendance, conduct, health, and safety of students.
  10. Participate in the screening, selection, orientation, training, assignment, and reassignment of culturally competent and diverse school staff.
  11. Supervise and evaluate the performance of all assigned building personnel and engage staff in the development of professional growth activities designed to support individual school/district goals and programs in order to improve student learning.
  12. Assist in the development, ongoing improvement, and implementation of the district and school curricular program.
  13. Establish a set of culturally responsive standard operating procedures, practices, and routines.
  14. Oversee the school's extracurricular program.
  15. Supervise the maintenance and operation of the building, grounds, and property assigned to the building.
  16. Plan and develop the school's budget with input from staff, allocate and adjust fiscal and material resources, assure timely completion of reports, and record maintenance for all school programs.
  17. Provide for effective staff communication--collaborate and resolve conflicts with others.
  18. Work cooperatively with other administrators--advise school director and other appropriate district administrators of progress, problems, and other information regarding the school's program.
  19. Be a contributing, effective member of the school and district leadership team.
  20. Perform other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. A Washington State principals' credential, or the ability to obtain one.
  2. Six years successful credentialed experiences including a minimum of three years in teaching. Administrative experience beyond the internship is strongly preferred. Successful candidates usually have served in an assistant principal or other administrative role prior to making application to our principal positions.
  3. A deep understanding of, passion for, and the motivation to carry out the mission of public education.
  4. Principal, assistant principal, or other administrative position in a mid to large-size school or school district is strongly preferred.
  5. Strong preference will be given to those candidates who can share various types of specific school or district data that have improved as a direct result of their leadership.
  6. Demonstrated success in philosophy, curriculum, and instruction at the position's grade level, including an understanding of a culturally responsive instructional process and a variety of instructional techniques as well as a commitment to the improvement of instructional programs.
  7. Demonstrated success in leading the improvement of student learning, as evidenced by the improvement of school-based and/or district-based data points.
  8. Demonstrated success in developing and implementing a school-wide discipline plan to ensure that positive, preventative, and restorative practices are implemented with cultural sensitivity and equitable application.
  9. Demonstrated successful and culturally responsive leadership experiences in staff leadership, supervision, and evaluation, and demonstrated ability to work effectively with teachers to improve instruction.
  10. Demonstrated success in supporting and sharing the organizational vision while collaborating with diverse staff to accomplish goals and problem solve.
  11. Demonstrated understanding of the change process and its relationship to current trends in education at the position's grade level.
  12. Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, scheduling, and allocating resources, reaching logical conclusions and making high-quality decisions using appropriate decision-making processes, and accepting responsibility for actions and consequences.
  13. Demonstrated effectiveness in using computer technologies to enhance instruction and to manage building functions.
  14. Demonstrated success in exercising good judgment, insight, self-awareness, integrity, and cultural responsiveness when interacting with diverse employees, staff, students, parents, patrons and business partners of the school district.
  15. Demonstrated effectiveness representing the school in the community through business partnerships and activities.
  16. Demonstrated understanding of effective leadership and instructional practices which lead to high levels of student engagement and achievement.
  17. Demonstrated understanding of socially just practices and strategies which enhance student achievement.
  18. Demonstrated ability in utilizing culturally responsive strategies to work effectively with administrators, teachers, and union leaders to improve classroom instruction.
  19. Demonstrated ability to foster an environment that focuses on quality results while motivating, developing, and supporting a diverse staff, encouraging continuous improvement, and working effectively as a member of a diverse team.
  20. Demonstrated strong work ethic and ability to work outside regular office hours as needed to accomplish tasks, provide support to building administrators, provide staff development, or meet with other constituents.
  21. Demonstrated commitment and ability to continue one's own lifelong learning, to develop talent and leadership skills in others, to provide critical feedback, and to receive critical feedback in order to maintain high standards for one's self and the organization.
  22. The ability and desire to establish positive relationships with persons regardless of race, gender, physical limitation, sexual orientation, or religious belief, with an active commitment to equal opportunity for all persons.
  23. Demonstrated success incorporating culturally competent strategies and utilizing culturally responsive communication and engagement strategies with all members of the school community.

  25. Demonstrated strong commitment to the principles of trust, teamwork, accessibility, problem solving and collaboration.
  26. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and interact successfully with diverse instructional, support services and administrative staff, including perceiving the needs and concerns of others; assisting others in resolving conflicts; motivating others; and effectively listening to staff, student, parents and patrons.
  27. Knowledge of teacher evaluation and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge in K-12 public schools.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  1. Currently a twelve-month, 260-day work year inclusive of paid holidays and 28 paid vacation days.
  2. Current base salary ranges are below, exclusive of a professional responsibility stipend, longevity stipend, and optional pay opportunities. Elementary Principal: $101,730-$114,498. Pay ranges subject to change by the Board of Directors and/or by bargaining.
  3. Fringe benefits include medical, dental, vision, life, and disability coverage.
  4. Other terms and conditions of employment as provided by board policy.
  5. Terms of employment for the 2018-2019 contract year, commencing on July 1, 2018, are subject to change as provided by the school district's Board of Directors and/or by bargaining.
