Position Summary

Is this position exempt from overtime pay?

Yes

Certified Special Education Teachers (preschool/elementary/secondary) provide special education instruction/services for students receiving Extended School Year (ESY) services. Teachers must possess the ability to create a positive and encouraging classroom climate for all students, with a demonstrated ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all students in the class. They must also have the ability to use instructional technology (document camera, SmartBoard) and use Blackboard effectively to access materials and documentation.

The program dates are Mondays through Thursdays, June 28 - August 2. Program times and locations vary. Acceptance of a summer position requires the teacher to report to work for the entire session. No paid leave is granted during the summer session and staff does not receive benefits of the regular school year (i.e. sick leave, business leave, vacation days, etc.).

ESY staff must make a commitment to be present for the ENTIRE program including all in-service days, workdays, and student instructional days. Failure to make this commitment may impact future employment with the ESY program.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The examples are illustrative and not all inclusive:

1. Provides direct instruction to students with disabilities.

2. Develops lesson plans/instructional materials and provides individualized and group instruction in order to meet the needs of each pupil as stated on the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).

3. Develops and implements instruction based on the ESY goals and objectives on a student's IEP.

4. Provides classroom instruction for students in a classroom setting.

5. Gathers materials and classroom set up.

6. Uses the language arts and math curricula.

7. Establishes a positive classroom climate.

8. Consults and confers regularly with colleagues regarding the educational, social, physical or emotional goals and objectives of students.

9. Participates in planning and implementation of instructional activities.

10. Inventory and return of instructional materials in a timely/orderly fashion.

11. Collects data (IEP, assessment, attendance).

12. Communicates effectively with parents.

13. Prepares and distributes final student reports.

14. Supervises teacher assistants supporting the instruction of students with disabilities.

15. Lifting may be required as part of the school assignment.

Education

• Teacher certification in Special Education as required by Maryland State Department of Education bylaw.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Working knowledge of Medicare billing preferred.

• Working knowledge of AACPS special education student database - TIENET.

• Ability to use technology, (laptops, desktops, specialized assessment and data analysis software).

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

• Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
