DFT Salary Schedule for Instruction Personnel Ranges: Annual

Teachers in critical shortage subject areas may be eligible, at the discretion of the District, for a financial bonus contingent upon available and sustainable funding.

Qualifications

Education:

Must possess a valid Michigan Teacher Certificate or Michigan Temporary Teaching Authorization (T2EA) with an endorsement in (EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION ZA, EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL ED. ZS), possess a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by the North Central Association of colleges and secondary schools or equivalent agency. Successful candidates who possess beyond a bachelor’s degree will be eligible for a salary differential.     

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

Under the direction of the principal, the teacher will:

1. Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students.

2.  Create a classroom environment that is conductive to learning and appropriate to the grade level assignment.

3.  Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence of preparation (lesson plans) upon request of the immediate supervisor.

4.  Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Develop reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintain order in the classroom in a fair and equitable manner congruent to Detroit Public schools student code of conduct and with knowledge of the district's core curriculum.

5.  Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals - establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.

6.  Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media.

7.  Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required/requested.

8.  Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and work station.

9.  Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.

10. Make provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.

11. Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher-aide(s) and/or volunteer (s) and together with his/her immediate supervisor evaluates their job performance.

12. Strive to maintain and improve professional competence (classwork, participation in professional growth activities). Works to implement through instruction and district's philosophy of education and its goals and objectives.

13. Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required.  Perform all other duties as assigned.

Attendance:

Regular Attendance is critical; must have an exemplary attendance record.

Citizenship:

Must be able to verify whether U.S. citizen, resident alien, or otherwise authorized to accept employment in the U.S.

Physical Condition:

Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined with or without accommodations.

All fingerprinting appointments will be scheduled by Detroit Public Schools, Division of Human Resources.

If you are a current Detroit Public Schools employee, presently employed with the district, you do not have to submit a fee related to obtaining the Detroit Public Schools security clearance.

A copy of your valid teacher certification should also be attached if certification is required for the position you are applying for.
