Physical Therapist

Position Summary:

Provides educationally necessary intervention in the area of motor skill development, focusing on preventing or reducing the effects of a disability and/or dysfunction, of children, to promote learning within the student's educational program. Services are provided in a variety of school settings, ranging from pre-school to high school.

Essential Duties:
  • Completes assessment of motor skill development with a focus on educational functioning.
  • Participates as part of a multidisciplinary team, which develops educational plans for students with disabilities.
  • Provides direct and consultative instructional services to students regarding motor skill development to assure reasonable educational benefit in the least restrictive environment.
  • Collaborates/consults with school staff, parents and outside agencies to assure issues regarding motor skill development are appropriately addressed in the school setting.
  • Works to promote independent functioning in activities of daily living such as wheel chair transfers and movement transitions.
  • Consults with physical education staff to assure that students with disabilities have the opportunity to participate in physical education programs to the fullest extent possible.
  • Administers evaluations/re-evaluations as part of the identification process to help in the determination of the need for Physical Therapy as a related service.
  • Develops and maintain appropriate Physical Therapy records i.e., documentation, schedules, progress notes, IEP, monthly reports etc., to ensure accountability.
  • Implements District, State and Federal special education regulations as they relate to motor skill development.
  • Supervises and evaluate Physical Therapy Assistant(s).
  • May travel to various schools in order to provide Physical Therapy Service in the district schools of students on caseload.
  • Participates in professional growth by attending meetings, in-services, and workshops related to the best practices of providing Physical Therapy in the school setting.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required):
  • Bachelor's in Physical Therapy or a related field from a national accrediting body which has been recognized by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Licensure and Supervision.
  • Current Physical Therapy license awarded by the Oklahoma State Board of Medical Llicensure and Supervision.
  • Oklahoma Teaching Certification in subjects listed below or subjects or Alternative Teaching Certification as approved by Oklahoma State Department of Education required.
    • Physical Therapy
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to different school sites to perform duties listed above.
  • Knowledge of adaptive equipment and assistive technology which may be required to address access needs of children with disabilities.
  • Ability to develop and implement instructional plans relating to motor development in the school setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other professionals.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to the changing needs of students.
  • Knowledge of District, State and Federal special education regulations as they relate to service for motor development.

  • Physical agility, able to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach
