GUEST SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETER

POSITION SUMMARY
: This position interprets for hearing impaired students using various sign systems, such as PSE, SEE, and/or ASL. Responsibilities include facilitating communication between hearing-impaired students and teachers and hearing students in a classroom setting, and providing interpreting services at school assemblies and other special events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. This list is meant to be representative, not exhaustive. Some incumbents may not perform all the duties listed while in other cases related duties may also be assigned.   • Accompany hearing impaired student to all classes; interpret teacher instructions and lectures using sign language. Ensure that student understands teacher's communication; repeat interpretation as requested. Interpret auditory responses and communications by other students or presenters' facilitating student's understanding of group interaction. Interpret sound track from films and tapes.Voice interpret signed responses for teacher or hearing students, as needed. Assist teacher in understanding verbal responses from student as needs. Communicate with teacher concerning student problems and progress. Secure teacher's attention as necessary to indicate that student has a question.Interpret school events for hearing impaired student, such as student assemblies, field trips, and special events. May interpret for hearing impaired student, parent, teachers of other during meetings, conferences or testing.Interpret for hearing impaired student in informal conversations with students and staff by interpreting language; interpret interaction between other students and hearing impaired student during unstructured time as necessary.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serves as a member of the Interpreter Services team of the District; performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or equivalent
Two (2) years of experience interpreting for the Deaf

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Demonstrated interpreting and transliterating skills (sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign).
Proficiency in using the English language.
Work scheduled hours on a consistent basis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two (2) years college-level coursework
Recognized two (2) year sign language interpreter training program
Certification by Registry of Interpreters for Deaf (RID) with CICT Certification. (Certified Interpreter and Certified Translator) or Level 4 or 5 from NAD.
Educational interpreting experience

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

The role of an Educational Interpreter within the educational team.

School board policies and procedures

Properly use sign language systems such as ASL, SEE, and PSE.

Work collaboratively with District staff and promote teamwork with co-workers

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

The employee in this position will frequently sit up to 30 minutes at a time, and handle/grasp throughout their shift. Near and far vision is required. The employee must be able to occasionally stand, walk, lift, carry, reach, bend/stoop, twist, and squat/kneel. This position rarely requires climbing/balancing or lifting bench to shoulder or overhead. The employee is required to constantly lift up to 10 lbs; frequently lift up to 25 lbs; and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Weights over 50 lbs should be done with a mechanical lift or with help from another person. The employee will occasionally push/pull up to 20 lbs.

This position works 90% of their time inside and 10% outside. Outside work can be in inclement weather. Noise level is high, exposure to outburst of student. Employee is required to wear protective gloves and masks as directed by the district program. Exposure to infectious disease. May occasionally have to assist in the control of an unruly, volatile student.

WORK SCHEDULE
This position typically works school days with some evenings for events, on an as-needed basis.

$21.90 per hour based on the 2017-18 Guest Employee salary schedule for Prof-Tech Level B
