Summary and Primary Purpose:

In October 2016, the San Antonio Independent School District and the Relay Graduate School of Education announced their partnership to open a personalized learning academy in San Antonio, helping to redefine what urban education looks like in the River City. In the 2018-19 school year, there will be two Teaching & Learning Lab Schools in San Antonio, and both will be the most innovative schools in the district serving the city's neediest students. We are looking for the strongest teachers from around the district and country for this major partnership endeavor between SAISD and Relay.

The Teaching & Learning Lab Schools are unlike any other school in San Antonio. Every student receive a Chromebook loaded with a variety of digital tools designed to create small-group learning communities in each subject throughout the school day. Rather than replacing the teacher, our digital tools empower and enable our teachers to create the smallest groups of students possible in each classroom for individualized, personal instruction. As a result of these small groups, teachers will be able to meet their students exactly where they are and push them to high achievement in every academic subject, the kind of academic excellence that will result in students eventually passing Advanced Placement classes and exams by the time they graduate high school.

Our students will rank with top students around the world, and will eventually perform at high levels in the country's top colleges and universities.

Our students, staff members, and families will exhibit an unstoppable level of shared commitment, joy, and drive—consistently celebrating each other and their shared Spanish heritage, affirming the school's values, and inspiring each other to push on in pursuit of their dreams. Every day start with a Community Circle, celebrating the successes of our school communities and facing down our collective challenges.

The Teaching & Learning Lab Schools will eventually grow to serve Pre-K-8th Grade.

THE ROLE

Teachers at the Teaching & Learning Lab Schools hold responsibility for the implementation of the schools' curricula and the success of all their students.

There is one Lead Teacher in every elementary school classroom, who partners with one Teaching Resident (a teacher in training) in that classroom. While the Lead Teachers are the teachers of record for that classroom, both the Lead Teacher and the Teaching Resident, with the help of a number of ESL Support Teachers, are responsible for teaching Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, and Science throughout the day.

Digital learning tools loaded onto each student's Chromebook allow for Lead Teachers and Teaching Residents to split classrooms into small groups for each subject. Teachers are in front of small groups of 5-10 students throughout much of the day. While the Teaching & Learning Lab Schools class size are larger than the traditional school in the district (some classes have 30-32 students), the addition of Residents, teacher supports, and technology allow for teachers and students to spend most of their days in very small groups.

The Teaching & Learning Lab Schools day is longer than the traditional school day, with breakfast starting at 7:30 AM and classes running through 4:00 PM. Students dismiss early each Friday, allowing for teachers to engage in professional development for at least three hours each week. Friday afternoons are set aside for staff development, including planning, data analysis, grade-level team meetings, and PLCs. Each week ends with a staff meeting run by the Principal and the Leadership Team. Teaching Residents will be responsible for an after-school tutoring block for students in need of extra academic help from 4:00 to 5:00 Monday-Thursday afternoons.

The elementary school team also includes the Principal, an Assistant Principal for the elementary school, a Principal Fellow for the elementary school, ESL Support Teachers, Art Teachers, Fitness Teachers, Social Workers, and Special Education Teachers.

The Teaching & Learning Lab Schools seek teachers who know they will thrive in this type of innovative, urgent, unique environment. We are seeking teachers who are committed to continuously improving curriculum and instruction through collaboration as part of a grade- and school- level team.
