Position Overview
Responsible for oversight and development of comprehensive and innovative special educationservices to meet diverse student needs while ensuring compliance with all federal and state regulations. Works collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services to ensure all students have comprehensive curricular, extracurricular, and support programs to meet their needs.

Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Special Education. Doctorate preferred.
  • Five years' experience in Special Education leadership and/or general administration.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License with General Administrative or Principal endorsement and Director of Special Education endorsement. Qualified Evaluator certification.
  • Extensive knowledge of special education programs, best practices in the field, and federal and state laws related to special education.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Evidence of collaborative leadership.

  • Responsibilities
  • District Administrative
  • Contributes to District leadership, working as an active member of the administrative team; assists in development of the total school philosophy of education.
  • Works collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services to ensure all students have comprehensive curricular, extracurricular, and support programs to meet their needs.
  • Works collaboratively with the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction and the Assistant Superintendent for Student Services to analyze and provide data on the student experience in high school and beyond.
  • Evaluates on an ongoing basis, the effectiveness of the special education program, curriculum, and procedures.
  • Recommends revisions to school policies and procedures that address the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Oversees the budget for all aspects of the Special Education program, and prepares projections in conjunction with the Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations and the Business Services staff. Identifies future needs and trends to inform program and budget development.
  • Keeps the Superintendent informed regarding trends in special education programs, services, and budget.
  • Program and Personnel Oversight
  • Leads the recruitment and hiring of Special Education personnel.
  • Leads the supervision and evaluation of tenured and non-tenured Special Education faculty. Works closely with teachers' primary supervisors in producing the summative evaluation and rating.
  • Supervises school psychologists and other related consultants
  • Monitors evaluation processes for initial referrals and reevaluations.
  • Supervises speech language pathologists and other related consultants; monitors language services provided to students.
  • Oversees the Educational Life Services and Transition program and staff.
  • Oversees the work of the outplacement coordinator, who assists with all out-of-district placements.
  • Oversees implementation of 504 services and coordinates appeals process with 504 Coordinator.
  • Works with the Special Education Coordinator at the Northfield Campus to oversee special education articulation with sender districts.
  • Legal Compliance
  • Ensures compliance with all new and existing legal requirements governing special education.
  • Coordinates all resolution and mediation meetings as well as Due Process hearings.
  • Ensures compliance with child find activities and identification of students with disabilities.
  • Oversees records maintenance of all children receiving special services.
  • Oversees transportation as a related service for students with disabilities.
  • Coordinates proportionate share activities for students attending private or parochial schools and homeschooled students within the district.
  • Other Areas of Responsibility
  • Ensures District maintains a permanent inventory of equipment purchased for special education.
  • Approves all supplies, materials, and texts used in special education classes.
  • Serves as district liaison with the North Suburban Special Education District (NSSED) and with the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Assumes responsibility for personal professional growth and development; for keeping current with relevant literature, new research findings, and improved techniques; and for attending appropriate meetings and conferences.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
