Summary:
This position provides support for interpreting services in the classroom and other educational settings to facilitate communication between students who are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing and other members of the school community; develops and promotes positive relations amongst members of the school community and the public.

Responsibilities:
1. Evaluates all Interpreters during classroom instruction from the Teacher and ensures communication dynamics are accessible to the students and staff; provides Interpreters, as assigned, for extracurricular activities.
2. Builds strong public and school community relations by providing comprehensive communication and follow through with Interpreter services. Reviews program, shares ideas; provides feedback to improve Interpreter services to students, staff and Deaf/HH team.
3. Provides and facilitates training for District Interpreters, working with Tacoma Public Schools (TPS) professional development office.
4. Provides and facilitates American Sign Language (ASL) classes to parents of Deaf/HH students.
5. Meets the needs of students, staff and families by having a broad linguistic range; provides interpretation in discipline situations and in emergencies such as, Child Protective Services (CPS), police or for Deaf/HH staff and students, with other school personnel.
6. Works as team member of the Deaf/HH Team by collaborating with the teachers and teachers of the Deaf and/or HH students as well as other Interpreters on school-wide interpreting issues and on special projects.
7. Provides budgetary oversight for TPS Interpreter Services.
8. Having a clear understanding of the role of the Administrator for Interpreter Services, ensures that the District Interpreters are following the code of professional conduct and the rules of confidentiality established by TPS; follows procedures determined by Assistant Director of Student Services of the Deaf/HH Program; may assist with hiring recommendations for Interpreter positions.

1. Remains current in the field through involvement in professional activities and continuing educational activities as directed.
2. Performs related duties as assigned, on a temporary basis.
3. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance or physical presence is an essential job requirement and critical to the performance of the work.

CONDITIONS
Substantial requirement to listen closely and concentrate on interpreting tasks and interpreting of others; confined to work station for prolonged periods; may be required to deal with difficult and sensitive situations and/or people; may be required to sit, kneel, or stand for prolonged periods; may be required to lift and carry up to 20 pounds, bend, squat, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, climb, and/or be mobile; needs to be flexible and required to travel from building to building.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent and completion of two year or four years Interpreter Training Program. National Certification from the RID, NIC, or NAD, EIPA3.5 or above preferred;
or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.

Licenses/Special Requirements
Two years' Interpreter Training Certificate required; RID Certification preferred. EIPA level 3.5 or above, has up to two years post hire to complete exam.
Valid Washington State Driver's License with access to personal transportation

Allowable Substitution
A native signer or child of a deaf adult (CODA) and ability to pass the communication standards of the performance section of the District's Interview tool.

Knowledge of Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing culture.
Knowledge of interpreting for Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing students.
Knowledge of educational interpreting.
Skill in interpreting.
Skill throughout the sign language continuum.
Skill in obtaining, clarifying and exchanging information.
Ability to perform an accurate, impartial and effective interpretation both expressively and receptively.
Ability to work as a team member and collaborate with others.
Ability to provide leadership.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to work without direct supervision.
Ability to interact with people who are Deaf and/or Hard of Hearing in a warm and confident manner.
Ability to remain flexible to adapt to changes in environment and/or schedules.
Ability to demonstrate reasonable, reliable and regular attendance.
Ability to promote understanding of Deaf and Hard of Hearing culture.
Ability to oversee budget of Interpreter Services.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multi-cultural, diverse economic setting.
