This is a temporary, part-time position. The current announcement is to develop a pool of qualified candidates for the AVID Tutor Program.

Salary range: TBD

Work Hours: Minimum of 2 hours a day; 1 or 2 days per week in a school

Work Location: Various Middle and High Schools

Important Note: These positions are contingent upon approval of staffing allotment for the current fiscal year.

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:

Help prepare middle school students in Prince Georges County Public Schools to graduate college ready. AVID is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is a program to prepare students in the academic middle for four year college eligibility. It has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.

Tutors are essential to the success of the AVID in-school elective class during the school year, where they facilitate student access to rigorous curriculum. As students or graduates from colleges and universities, AVID Tutors receive formal training and also serve as role models. The program in PGCPS is offered in 26 schools; 6 high schools and 20 middle schools. Additional information on the AVID Program can be obtained from: www.avidonline.org.
  • Tutors will work a minimum of two hours a day; one or two days per week in a school. Approximately ninety minutes per day will be spent directly with students.
  • Tutor middle or high school students in Prince Georges County Public Schools;
  • Work individually with students on writing assignments;
  • Lead peer critique groups;
  • Respond to student writing with oral and written comments;
  • Conduct brainstorming and clustering sessions;
  • Develop writing assignments;
  • Teach mini-lessons;
  • Establish and maintain rapport with the students;
  • Assure that the students do the work;
  • Order learning priorities;
  • Facilitate learning;
  • Complete AVID Tutor Training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Job Requirements:

  • Must take initiative and confidence in work;
  • Former AVID participant and AP exams taken in High School preferred;

  • Education and/or Experience Requirements:

    Minimum of 30 College credits from an Accredited College or University or PGCPS students in Work Based Learning Program will be considered with recommendation from Principal and Advisor.

    None Required.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.
