Supervised by and/or Reports to: Director of Instruction

General Responsibilities:Assist the Director of Instruction, principals, and teachers in ensuring that the elementary, middle, and secondary science curriculum offers rich educational experiences, in ensuring effective instructional resources are provided to support the written curriculum, and in promoting the use of effective teaching strategies.

Curriculum Responsibilities:Assist the Director of Instruction with the alignment of state standards into school-level science instructional programs.

Keep abreast of all Virginia Department of Education expectations and requirements related to science instruction.

Support science curriculum teams in the design of course organizers, scope and sequence of units of instruction, pacing guides, curriculum writing, and in the development of end- of-unit assessments.

Coordinate curriculum revisions/realignment of standards and address the incorporation of 21stCentury Learning Skills.

Facilitate the correlation of the Science Standards of Learning with K-12 science textbooks, ancillary materials, and assessments.

Facilitate textbook/resource adoption processes for K-12 science.

Facilitate the implementation of the K-12 STEM plan.

Assessment Responsibilities:

Provide support to principals and lead science teachers, STEM coaches and specialists on analyzing and utilizing data to improve achievement results of students.

Assist the Director of Assessment and Accountability in disseminating information to science teachers related to Standards of Learning Assessment changes and requirements.

Assist the Director of Assessment and Accountability with analyzing and disseminating data related to science formative and summative assessments.

Instruction Responsibilities:

Work with the Director of Instruction, the Coordinator for Professional Development, and principals to provide professional development for science teachers to improve student achievement and engagement in learning.

Support principals in the implementation of standards-based classrooms.

Assist teachers in designing acceleration and/or intervention strategies to support the learning needs of students.

Participate with K-12 science teacher teams to further develop a collaborative approach to teaching and learning.

Support teachers in establishing a blended learning environment.

Participate in classroom walkthroughs and provide feedback to teachers and principals.

Additional Responsibilities:

Represent MCPS on the Region IV joint Science meetings.

Maintain active membership in professional organizations.

Serve as an active member of the MCPS Instructional Team.

Work closely with the business community and the Mathematics Content Specialist, K- 12, to support STEM education initiatives.

Manage the after-school STEM and Summer Engineering/STEM programs.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Instruction and/or the Director of Assessment and Accountability.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong foundational knowledge in sciences.

Solid understanding of the Virginia Standards of Learning for Science.

An understanding of formative/summative assessment and the ability to assist administrators and teachers in analyzing and interpreting data as it pertains to setting improvement goals and targets.

Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with administrators and teachers to meet established goals.

Ability to lead groups of teachers through curriculum design/alignment, the design and development of formative assessments.

Requisite Education and Experience:

Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with a Science endorsement.

Master's degree preferred.

Five years successful teaching experience in science curriculum including general science courses as well as advanced level courses.

Physical Requirements:

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as

normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
