The Student Services Department (Special Education) is accepting applications for all classifications of educational assistants. This on-going pool of candidates will be used to recruit and hire for all vacancies. When you apply, you will be asked to specifically all classifications and time blocks for which you wish to be considered. Qualified candidates will be contacted by SSD for interviews/screening as positions become available.
  1. The position assists the teacher in planning and implementing any of the following: educational, social, emotional and functional services that enable students to benefit from their education.
  2. The position may provide instruction in the form of lessons, skill sequences, or assignments designed and/or selected by the teacher.
  3. Performs a variety of clerical tasks in support of the teacher and student, including but not limited to preparation of lessons and support materials selected by the teacher.
  4. Monitors student progress by collecting prescribed data at scheduled intervals.
  5. Collaborates with supervisors to provide supervision and support of students where assigned.
  6. May support student functional needs including toileting, feeding, personal hygiene guidance, and motor skills development.
  7. Participate in scheduled meetings to review student progress, needs and/or challenges.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Ability to: continuously walk and stand; occasionally lift and carry up to 50lbs; continuously use arms, wrists, hands, vision, hearing, and talking.
  2. Ability to instruct students in large or small groups, be goal oriented and outcome driven.
  3. Ability to problem solve, be creative and adaptable to changing conditions.
  4. Ability to clearly communicate using respectful language, receive feedback and be a role model for students.
  5. Dependability, adaptability, consistency, patience and positivity are essential, as is ability to deal with stress of working closely with students with disabilities.
  6. Knowledge of math reading, writing, social sciences, and health principals. Ability to adapt standard educational curriculum to the specialized needs of students with disabilities.
  7. Ability to observe, interpret and record data involving academic, social, functional and behavioral progress of students.
  8. Ability to prepare classroom materials or artwork, word process using computers, email, and operate other technology as assigned.
  9. Ability to work independently and work harmoniously with other teachers and assistants.
  10. Ability to assess situations and act swiftly and appropriately and with sound judgment for the safety and well-being of students and staff.
  11. Experience differentiating practices for diverse populations.
  12. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse students staff and community populations.


Minimum Qualifications:

To demonstrate Highly Qualified status under No Child Left Behind, you will be required to attach documentation to your application to show:
  • Completion of at least two years of post-secondary study consisting of 72 credit hours, 48 semester units (attach transcript); OR
  • Obtaining an associates or higher degree (attach diploma); OR
  • Meeting a rigorous standard of quality and demonstrating, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing and mathematics (attach test scores).
  1. Previous training, education, or experience in instructional techniques and behavior management and modification methods.
  2. Previous training in basic clerical skills. Demonstrated ability to type.
  3. Bilingual proficiency and/or multicultural experience strongly preferred.
  4. Possession of a valid Red Cross First Aid Certificate, including CPR training methods and procedures is preferred.
