Adult Basic Education instructors provide remedial-level instruction in reading, writing, and math skills. High School Equivalency instructors provide instruction in the subjects needed for passing HSE exams: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies.

 

Essential Job Functions: INSTRUCTION AND PREPARATION- 90%
  • Teach to skill deficits as outlined by TABE and Practice Test;
  • Provide effective classroom management;
  • Provide differentiated instruction using grouping strategies;
  • Prepare lesson plans which incorporate critical-thinking, problem-solving, and test-taking skills;
  • Use the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) for Adult Education curriculum guides to select appropriate content;
  • Integrate Workplace Readiness Skills and Digital Literacy instruction in all classes;
  • Complete Goal Setting, Mid-Term Reviews, Exit Surveys, and Career Pathways activities as required by the VDOE or local program;
  • Communicate CCPS policies to students as outlined in the Code of Conduct
STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND ADMINISTRATION- 10%
  • Maintain student records and complete student data collection as required by the VDOE's Office of Adult Education and Literacy or local program;
  • Report absent students to the Retention Counselor weekly;
  • Submit attendance and lesson plans as outlined on the staff calendar;
  • Attend up to four mandatory staff meetings or professional development sessions each year;
  • Maintain a working email and check messages on a regular basis;
  • Monitor office mailboxes for less-timely information;
  • Maintain an inventory of instructional aids, equipment, books, or other items loaned to the teacher
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to teach at the pace of students and be able to work with students one-on-one or in large or small groups. Ability to communicate effectively with students from different cultures, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel or the Google equivalents for completing lesson plan and attendance forms. 

 

Requirements:
  • Must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.  Virginia teaching license preferred.
  • Considerable instructional experience, preferably in an adult environment.  Instructors are expected to develop skills through professional development and maintain certifications as mandated by the VDOE's Office of Adult Education and Literacy (OAEL).
