Job Description

The mission of Boston Public Schools Department of Adult Education and Community Services is to provide a variety of high quality educational services to BPS parents, children, employees and Boston residents in order to help them to develop and improve their educational status, political status, economic status and lives.

The Boston Public Schools' Department of Adult Education serves adult students who want to learn to speak English, improve his/her academic level and/or graduate from high school. The department employs eight full and thirty-nine part-time staff to work with 500 students. The department currently has two locations and operates a day and evening program. Online courses are also available for students wishing to utilize a more flexible independent learning modality.

We are looking for a staff member to join our energetic team; someone who is committed to working with our students, someone who understands the lives of urban adults and has a proven track record of working successfully with adult students who face academic and personal challenges. Adult Education provides students with engaging academic classes, electives, enrichment activities and individualized learning plans. Priority is given to parents of school-age children in order to empower them to become advocates for their families and to become more involved in their children's education.

Terms/Salary: Stipend position, will work 2 evenings per week with the possibility of working some Wednesdays evenings. BTU hourly rate. Minimum: 192 hours annually. Boston Central Adult High School follows the BPS academic calendar.
Responsibilities:
  1. Teach one or two sections of an 80-minute class on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
  2. Contribute to ongoing curriculum development at appropriate level.
  3. Attend all scheduled departmental professional development sessions.
  4. Integrate technology in the classroom.
  5. Administer regular, ongoing in-class assessments, including (but not limited to) a mid-term exam and final exam.
  6. Support, monitor, collect and analyze data relative to student's academic performance goals.
  7. Make program's expectations clear to students at the beginning of each new semester.
  8. Possibly serve on Instructional Leadership Team (ILT).
  9. Communicate classroom/student issues to Assistant Director in a timely manner.
  10. Perform other duties as requested by the Director.

Qualifications (Required)
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the Massachusetts K-12 and/or ABE Curriculum Frameworks.
  • At least three (3) years experience teaching adults.
  • Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree in content area or related field is strongly perferred.
  • Understanding of the Common Core Curriculum.
  • Background in adult learning theories (including teaching and/or training).
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Flexibility to work with individual learning styles and the ability to manage multi-level classrooms to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to learn.
  • Good interpersonal skills which are necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators and agencies/stakeholders.
  • Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of comptency-based instruction.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Valid MA teaching license in the appropriate field is required.
  • Model professional behaviors that include punctuality, organization, high expectations, respect and the ability to maintain a safe and culturally sensitive learning environment.

Preferred
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Cape Verdean or Haitian Creole a strong plus.
  • Dual certification in Special Education and ESL Category training certificate, a strong plus.
  • Prior work or volunteer experience with non-traditional students.
  • Experience with any of the following: project-based learning, portfolio assessment, competency-based education, and cooperative group work, integration of technology and cross disciplinary learning, experiential learning, alternative assessments and integrating school to career experiences into the curriculum, a strong plus.
