Special Education Teacher for the Visually Impaired



POSITION: Special Education or Certified Auxillary Service Provider orTeacher of the Visually Impaired
LOCATION: District - primarily at Indian Paintbrush Elementary School
CONTRACT: 50% - 100%
COMPENSATION: $43,625 minimum - actual salary based on education and years experience (will be pro-rated for contract percentage)
START DATE: August 2016
CLOSING DATE: 6/26/16 or when filled

QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must hold, or be eligible to hold, a certificate issued by the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board with an endorsement as a special education teacher, an auxillary service provider such as SLP or other related field or as a teacher of the visually impaired. Other desired qualifications include: Considerable knowledge of the implications of visual impairments as they relate to the growth, development, and education of students with visual impairments or the willingness to want to work with visually impaired students and to enroll in a specific training program for this purpose; communicates effectively both orally and in written form; knowledge of the rules and principles of Braille codes with the ability to instruct and transcribe materials in each code or the willingness to enroll in a program to develop this skill; knowledge of the function and use of assistive, accommodative devices for use by the student with visual impairments; a working knowledge of both Wyoming and federal regulations and guidelines; ability to accurately measure, observe, report, and record learning progress of students; ability to coordinate and implement an itinerant caseload serving students with visual impairments; and knowledge of basic orientation and mobility techniques used with visually impaired persons.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position provides direct and indirect instruction and support to students K-12 with visual impairments; interprets and explains eye condition(s) and the ensuing educational implications to school staff responsible for instruction of students with visual impairments; teams with other experts in visual impairments to expand their knowledge base for the benefit of students; develops and implements individualized educational programs for students with visual impairments; provides for the acquisition and instruction of adaptive equipment and materials to be utilized by students with visual impairments; supervises students in the classroom, general school building and community; develops and trains individuals to restore orientation and mobility skills to the legally blind; assesses student's aptitude for travel instructions; provides individualized travel instruction in basic and advanced cane techniques: local environment, residential travel, public transportation, business travel, and congested business travel; teaches students to travel independently, either on foot or via public carrier, by use of sensory cues, and "long cane" travel technique; and other related responsibilities and functions.
