We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf or hard of hearing individuals. We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Sign Language Interpreter to facilitate communication between hearing and deaf or hard of hearing individuals. The ideal candidate will be proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and possess a deep understanding of Deaf culture. Responsibilities:
- Provide accurate and effective interpretation between spoken language and ASL in various settings.
- Assist in ensuring clear communication between hearing and deaf or hard of hearing individuals, adapting interpreting techniques to meet the needs of the audience.
- Maintain strict confidentiality in all interpreting assignments, adhering to ethical standards and guidelines.
- Act as a cultural mediator to bridge cultural differences and ensure mutual understanding between parties.
- Prepare for interpreting assignments by reviewing relevant materials, understanding the context, and familiarizing yourself with the subject matter.
- Keep accurate records of interpreting assignments, including dates, times, and locations.
- Stay current with developments in the field by attending workshops, training sessions, and conferences to maintain certification and enhance skills.
- National certification from a recognized body (e.g., Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf - RID) is highly preferred.
- Fluent in American Sign Language and spoken English, with the ability to interpret accurately and efficiently. (Bilingual preferred)
- professional interpreting experience.
- Bachelor's degree in ASL/Deaf Studies, Interpretation, or a related field is preferred.
- Understanding of Deaf culture and the ability to effectively interact with the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
- Strong communication, listening, and interpersonal skills. Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and empathy.
- Proficient in using interpreting-related technology and video relay services (VRS).
- Ability to work collaboratively with other interpreters, staff, and clients.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think quickly in dynamic situations.
- Capacity to adapt interpreting style to suit different settings and individual needs.
- Commitment to upholding the Code of Professional Conduct as outlined by the RID or relevant certifying body.
