Job Title: School Safety Specialist

Maior Functions

Under the direction of the Director of Student Affairs, the School Safety Specialist will provide the necessary leadership and coordination to help develop and maintain an Emergency Management Plan and Crisis Plan for Madison County Schools (MCS). The School Safety Specialist will also do checks involving residency within the District.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Help coordinate a comprehensive/school safety program for the District
  • Serve as a liaison with local law enforcement agencies and the community
  • Coordinate with all local first responders in the county, including law enforcement, fire departments, JDC, mental health agencies, EOC, and NWS/NOAA
  • Help coordinate emergency response programs between the school and the general community to develop programs and provide services to promote a safe and orderly environment for all students in school and on school busses
  • Review all Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) audit recommendations for school safety, and follow up accordingly to meet compliance requirements in cooperation with appropriate District staff
  • Perform routine inspections at the MCS schools to ensure adherence to safety and security standards
  • Adhere to the Mississippi Educator Code of Ethics
  • Check and review all Special Affidavits within the District
  • All other duties as assigned

Daily Activities and Duties
  • Assist with any investigations, staff or student as needed
  • Visit campuses and communicate daily with administrators and the local entities (law enforcement, fire departments, SRO, etc...) that serve our 23 school sites
  • Research and study new and innovative approaches to school safety, both locally and nationally
  • Provide extra security when needed at special events
  • Advise administrators on safety issues at their campus
  • Attend and critique safety drills (tornado, fire, lockdown, etc...)
  • Provide professional development for schools on safety and security
  • Review crisis and emergency response plans and drills
  • Schedule and conduct school safety assessments per MDE's guidelines
  • Maintain reports on safety issues

Knowledge. Skills and Abilities
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, evenings and/or in emergency situations; ability to investigate suspicious circumstances, persons, vehicles, etc...
  • Must be able to work inclement weather and be able to walk run, climb, crawl, or sit for extended periods of time
  • May be required to physically restrain parties in a conflict. In extreme cases, may be exposed to violent and/or armed confrontations
  • Must be able to demonstrate the ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues that arise in the schools; must be able to effectively communicate with both public and school personnel; extensive communications (verbal and written) with students, staff and internal/external stakeholders is required; will be responsible for managing behaviors of victims, witnesses and others when handling or responding to incidents; requires the use of sound judgment; ability to work with youth and adults
  • Required proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook and other office equipment such as incident reporting software, fax, copies, and scanners
  • Knowledge of Mississippi Criminal and Traffic Code, City and County Ordinances, Criminal procedures, Juvenile Law and court proceedings
  • Knowledge of Homeland Security/FEMA/MEMA requirements, state, county, and city in relations to emergency management
  • Working knowledge and experience with the National Incident Management System and ICS
  • Ability to read and work from floor plans, layouts and schematics

Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred. (Associate's degree in related field/extensive law enforcement leadership experience may be considered.)
  • A minimum of five years of experience in law enforcement in a traditional law enforcement agency is required.
  • Law enforcement leadership experience preferred.
  • Experience in a school/educational environment and emergency management preparedness experience is preferred.
  • Valid MS Driver's license is required.
  • MS Law Enforcement standards for yearly firearms certification required.
  • Enhanced concealed carry permit required.
  • Investigative experience is required.
