JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: TEACHER (ESL)
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. New Jersey Educator Certification in any K-12 area.
2. Must hold or be eligible for ESL Certification #1475.
3. Demonstrated knowledge of effective teaching methods & developmentally
appropriate classroom activities
4. Ability to maintain a positive learning environment
5. Strong communication/interpersonal skills
6. Required criminal history background check and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal
resident alien status.
7. Proof of N.J. residency, as required by statute.
REPORTS TO: Principal
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Work to achieve state core curriculum content standards and district goals and
objectives by promoting active learning in the classroom using board-adopted
curriculum and other appropriate learning activities.
2. Set specific objectives in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and carry through
presentation to effectively achieve these objectives.
3. Participate in the assessment of the English proficiency of pupils whose native language
is other than English.
5. Assess pupil academic progress, English proficiency and personal growth toward stated
objectives of instruction. Assess annually to determine pupils ready to exit the
program.
6. Maintain records of pupils’ educational progress in class record books and/or board
approved forms and summarize these marks for reporting purposes.
7. Identify academic and support services needs of limited English proficient pupils and
cooperate with other professional staff member in assessing and resolving learning
problems.
8. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a classroom
climate conducive to learning.
9. Assist the administration in implementing all policies and/or rules governing student life
and conduct.
10. Develop reasonable rules of behavior and procedure for the teacher’s specific area of
responsibility.
11. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the
maturity and interests of students.
12. Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establish
clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects, and the like.
13. Counsel with colleagues, students, and/or parents on a regular basis.
14. Acknowledge and respect individual differences of each child and provide the child
with educational experiences accordingly.
15. Diagnose the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance
of administrators and district specialists as required.
16. Assess the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports,
as required.
17. Foster sound relationships with students, parents, fellow teachers, non-teaching
personnel, and administration through established channels of communication.
18. Implement Professional Improvement Plans as written into the observation and/or
evaluation reports.
19. Participate in those activities that promote professional growth.
20. Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities as assigned.
21. Perform other duties within the scope of the certification, as may be assigned by the
Principal.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Ten Months; tenurable;
Salary and benefits as established by the Teachers’ Agreement;
Evaluated annually by the Principal, consistent with Achieve
N.J. Standards.
