Route Manager, Administrative Coordinator, Bus Operations Supervisor, and Director of Transportation Services may provide guidance and direction.


To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Eligible candidates receive paid commercial driver's license (CDL) training.

  • High school diploma, general education (GED) preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of three years' driving experience.
  • Ability to gain the knowledge of Virginia Department of Education and School Division policies, regulations, and laws.
  • Ability to operate a school bus in a safe and effective manner and drive defensively under a variety of road, weather, and traffic conditions.
  • Ability to operate wheelchair lift and wheelchair/passenger restraint systems.
  • Ability to recognize and report malfunctioning automotive and wheelchair lift equipment.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow written and oral directions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, and establish and maintain professional relationships with students, school staff, the general public, and others.
  • Ability to maintain discipline over student passengers and to manage student behavior in a manner that is conducive to safe driving. Ability to take initiative to make timely and accurate decisions and adapt to change while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Ability to use good judgment and recognize and react well to emergency situations.
  • Ability to identify a medical emergency and take appropriate action.
  • Ability to operate and monitor two-way radio equipment to communicate with Transportation office and other drivers.

  • Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.
  • Must have a physical examination of a scope prescribed by the Board of Education.
  • Must furnish a statement or copy of records from the Department of Motor Vehicles showing that the records of such Department do not disclose that the person, within the preceding five years, has been convicted upon a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, convicted of a felony or assigned to any alcohol safety action program or driver alcohol rehabilitation program pursuant to §18.2-271.1 or, within the preceding 12 months, has been convicted of two or more moving traffic violations or required to attend a driver improvement clinic by the Commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles pursuant to §46.2-498.
  • Must furnish a statement signed by two reputable persons who reside in the School Division or in the applicant's community that the person is of good moral character.
  • Must have reached the age of 18 by the first day of the school year.
  • Must submit to alcohol and controlled substance testing.
  • Must have completed requirements for American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and the Virginia Department of Education's school bus driver training.

The employee must have sufficient strength and agility to move, lift, and secure students in child safety restraint systems weighing up to 50 pounds and assist students in entering and exiting the bus in routine and emergency situations. The driver must be able to perform any required emergency evacuation functions to include, but not limited to, entering and exiting the school bus. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, and peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus and discern colors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, sit, stand, twist, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to smell smoke, fuel, and other odors.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work near moving mechanical parts. The employee is exposed to various weather conditions to include, but not limited to, wet and/or humid and cold/hot weather conditions. Also, the employee may be exposed to fumes and airborne particles, as well as minor vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.


The school bus driver operates a school bus to transport students safely to and from schools and their authorized bus stop locations. The driver is responsible for performing driving functions safely and efficiently and remains at the assigned standby location when not on an assignment. The driver may be assigned a run or set of runs on a temporary basis. The school bus driver provides transportation service for students on extracurricular events. The driver operates the bus in compliance with School Division policies and regulations, Transportation Department oral or written instructions, and state laws. The driver performs related tasks as assigned or required and conducts scheduled emergency bus evacuation drills on emergency exit procedures.

  • Work collaboratively with all stakeholders in Providing A World-Class Education.
  • Attend work daily in a timely and consistent manner.
  • Comply with conditions of the bus driver contract, rules, regulations, policies, written department operating procedures, and other administrative directives.
  • Perform general maintenance tasks needed to keep the vehicle or its equipment in good working condition to include, but not limited to, pre-trip and post-trip inspections, fueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, and cleaning the interior and the exterior of buses.
  • Promptly report any potential safety or operational problems to include, but not limited to, incidents or accidents.
  • Complete required reports or documentation.
  • Perform route, schedule, and bus operations as directed by the department.
  • Provide input on improving safety or efficiency.
  • Deliver bus to the maintenance shop for preventative maintenance and repairs as needed and for scheduled monthly inspections.
  • Deliver bus to assigned refueling location as needed.
  • Operate the bus on assigned bus route and time schedule.
  • Recommend improvements and changes to bus routes, stops, and schedules.
  • Administer first aid and/or cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as appropriate.
  • Assist in the loading and unloading of ambulatory and non-ambulatory students.
  • Assist in securing electric/manual wheelchairs for transport using wheelchair restraint systems (tie-down devices) as necessary.
  • Assist in securing students for transport using passenger child safety restraint systems when students' needs require the use of such systems.
  • Enforce acceptable student behavior and conduct on the bus while maintaining safety.
  • Complete Student Discipline Referral forms and submit it to the school principal or the designated school administrator when discipline problems occur.
  • Complete and submit accurate school bus schedules and weekly time and leave reports as required.
  • Submit timely and accurate documents and reports.
  • Attend required training and meetings.
  • Assist with the training of new drivers or attendants as needed.
  • Make timely and accurate decisions.
  • Serve as a mentor to other drivers as required.
  • Model professionalism and promote a professional and positive image.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

SALARY: Hiring Range: $24.36 - $37.94 per hour
