Purpose of Position

The purpose of this role is to provide overall leadership, supervision and coordination of all athletic programs and school operations to promote, support and align them with each High School's School Improvement Plan, the MMSD District's Strategic Framework and Graduate Vision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Develops and coordinates a system for enhancing sportsmanship throughout the school in concert with the school's implementation of the BEP to encourage healthy competition while maintaining a balance of respect for one another. Oversees athletic discipline procedures per District athletic code and WIAA regulations.
  • Designs and submits a strategic budget plan that effectively leverages district and school funds and monitors expenditures in the budget in order to maintain, control and account for local funds and student activity funds to promote educational goals of the school and District.
  • Plans, develops and executes an initiative to maximize opportunities for students to participate in athletic programs. Directs procedures for athletic registration, orientation, and fee collection in alignment with District expectations and policy.
  • Works collaboratively with appropriate administrative staff at the school and Central Office to ensure smooth operations and systems to support school improvement such as human resources, financial and accounting functions, maintenance, security, concessions, and recreational programs.
  • At the direction of the principal and district athletic director, coordinate and lead school operations systems that could include but are not limited to facilities management, security, procurement, custodial oversight, transportation, etc that enables the school leadership to maintain their focus on instruction. This includes the hiring, supervision and evaluation of said operations support staff.
  • Serves as a resource for student athletes, coaches, counselors and families regarding rules and regulations of MMSD, WIAA, NCAA, and NCAA Clearinghouse, to ensure our students/athletes who wish to participate in athletics on the collegiate level maximize their opportunities.
  • Supervises and coordinates the preparation of all athletic schedules in order to effectively and efficiently use facilities. Work closely with MSCR to support recreational programming during the summer and during the school year to enhance the quality and quantity of programs in athletics/activities across the district when school is not in session.
  • Regularly reviews and tracks student performance indicators (i.e. EWS) to develop and implement interventions for at-risk athletes who are not on track for graduation(i.e. LEAD)
  • Based on MMSD FACE Standards, creates systems of communication and engagement with parents and the community, specifically booster clubs that engenders them as partners in improving school operations and athletics. Such systems will include a promotional newsletter and calendar to improve awareness amongst students, staff and the community. Promotes effective communication between the schools and community to create positive support, understanding and participation for continued program improvement.
  • Hires, supervises and evaluates high school athletics coaches and support staff to ensure high quality programming. Regularly assesses the school's athletics programs to ensure alignment with School Improvement Plans and the Strategic Framework and translates goals and objectives into actions that directly benefit the student.
  • Works with Principal, HR, and District AD to appropriately staff, compensate, evaluate, and do performance review for coaches, LTEs, and other staff related to athletics and events
  • In conjunction with Big 8 Commissioner (and MMSD assigner), employ and supervise all officials and workers at the school athletic events such as football games, soccer, and track meets.
  • Responsible for coordinating stadium/facilities preparation, game operations and security.
  • Designs, implements and evaluates an annual professional development plan for coaches, trainers and school's operations support staff.
  • Participates in ongoing professional development aligned to the school's operations and athletic programming needs and SIP. Maintains knowledge of existing laws, rules, regulations, and District policies regarding athletics, safety matters, budget development and administration principles, and FACE standards.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified Athletic Administrator, or must obtain within three years of hire
  • CPR/AED certification, or willingness to obtain
  • Experience as a coach, trainer, or administrator in a high school athletic department for three years or more, or combination of relevant experience in similar roles that require high level of of leadership, collaboration, communication, and systems work
  • Leadership experience with multiple constituencies
