Department Overview:
The Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education (OMME) is committed to ensure our students will acquire 21st century bi-literacy skills and cross-disciplinary knowledge required to succeed in college and/or careers. OMME also monitors and provides guidance and support to schools and central administration to ensure that legal compliance is in place for equitable access to services and programming pertaining to Multilingual Learners (ML) congruent with current research and the BPS vision, mission, and goals.

Job Description:

The Director of Multilingual Community outreach is an integral part of the Office of Multilingual and Multicultural Education's strategy to increase the district's outreach and empowerment of ML parents. This position coordinates with key members of the OMME leadership team to identify programmatic and resource needs that allow Multilingual Learner families to be successful in BPS and beyond. Through this position, ML parents and community members are engaged as partners to promote the success of Multilingual Learner students at their schools.

The Director is responsible to lead a team of Family Engagement Specialists to enact a wide range of district initiatives in the native languages of the represented communities. Integrated into this role is developing partnerships within the ethnic and linguistic communities represented to empower and educate them on how to engage and advocate for the educational needs of their child. The Director will collaborate in a cross functional manner with the Office of Communications, Welcome Services, Office of the Achievement Gap and other stakeholders to ensure that there is a well coordinated effort to represent the needs of this community at all levels.

Reports To: Deputy Chief of Instructional Supports, OMME

Responsibilities:
  • Train and lead a team of Multilingual Family Engagement Specialists to provide support for diverse parent and community interests and needs. Ensure that the team is successfully responding to parent concerns and conducting relative professional development on ML family engagement for administrators, teachers, parent center staff, and other stakeholders. Provide an infrastructure for training and technical assistance to ensure that ML parents, youth,and other stakeholders are empowered about ML student achievement goals.
  • ML Parent Outreach: Liaise with the BPS Office of Engagement, who oversees the district's policies around parent engagement. Partner around the needs, opportunities and resources available for ML families. Assist in the development, execution, evaluation, and logistical planning for upcoming community and family initiatives that welcome and support and empower ML families and students. Provide cultural training to school staff and/or school action teams to implement effective parent engagement plans.
  • Community Trainings: Ensures that parent education and involvement activities promote and are aligned to District goals, including increasing graduation rates, college access, Common Core State Standards, and the OMME Strategic Plan.
  • Parent Advisory Expansion: Develop and implement a comprehensive plan to expand ML parent participation in school advisory roles through the creation of Multilingual Advisory Committees at each BPS school. Continue to work with current District-level Advisory Committee (DELAC) to implement plans to increase ML parent participation across the district. Assist the Office of Engagement in facilitating district elections with the intention of sharing and garnering ML parent interest.
  • Technology Goes Home: In partnership with the Office on Instructional Technology, host language specific training sessions for communities around this district initiative of providing low-income families access to technology.
  • Advocacy: Lead efforts in connecting BPS to community organizations that aid BPS students and families around concerns such as DACA, Immigration. This includes the management of all external media's (Facebook, Twitter, DACA website) that aid in transmitting meaningful communication to ML families.
  • ML Classroom Simulations: In partnership with Countdown to Kindergarten, plan, recruit ML teachers, organize relevant marketing and partnerships to host simulations of SEI classroom spaces for new ML families to BPS. These classroom experiences are to be produced for Dual Language and SLIFE programs as directed.
  • Equity and High Expectations: Demonstrate a commitment to excellence, equity, and high expectations for all students with an emphasis on building on the strengths that students bring to the teaching/learning process in order to support closing the achievement and opportunity gaps for MLs.
  • Professionalism: Model professional behavior that addresses job responsibilities, district policies and procedures, and the expectations of professionals working in a multilingual, multicultural, and economically diverse community.

  • Reflection, Collaboration, and Personal Growth: Reflect on practice in collaboration with colleagues, monitor personal and professional growth, and pursue professional development in needed areas.
  • Perform other tasks as requested by the Deputy Chief of Instructional Supports and/or Chief of OMME
Qualifications - Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse groups of people.
  • Excellent customer service techniques with strong ability to problem solve.
  • Ability to o conduct research and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of computer programs including word processing, database management, PowerPoint, Excel,Desktop Publishing and Google Applications.
  • Skills To create presentations, reports charts and tables from existing data
  • Proven ability to work independently, exercise judgment, manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, with good editorial skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

Qualifications - Preferred:
  • Master's Degree in a related field
  • Experience teaching or working in the field of English Language Learners and/or dual language learners
  • Experience teaching or working in an urban public school district
  • Second Language Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese), Vietnamese, Cape Verdean Creole, Portuguese or Somali
