EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST (ETS)



SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, assists staff in a variety of instructional activities, basic level technical issues, and in the supervision of students in the computer lab. Incumbent performs related work as required.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists staff in a variety of technology related issues and activities; assists in presenting new software to students and staff utilizing a variety of teaching methods; assists students, individually or in groups with lesson assignments and projects; reinforces learning concepts; confers with classroom teacher on progress of students; organizes software according to teacher's needs; provides basic technical support for computers, printers, interactive whiteboards, etc.; supports teachers with district approved curriculum software, and with district supported productivity software; reports and submits work orders on inoperative equipment to the appropriate individual; prints student's writing and art work; customizes media to meet teacher's particular needs; distributes and collects classroom materials and prepares computer lab for use; orders supplies and equipment; maintains student and attendance records; maintains computer lab bulletin boards; observes progress and problem areas of students for referral to the teacher; assists in maintaining safety and discipline of students; and enforces school rules and regulations and assists in the support of district and site based computer applications. Works with Assessment about SBAC duties.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience: Any experience equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:
  1. Education: Equivalent to a high school diploma. Some education (i.e., college coursework, workshops, seminars, etc.) in the area of computer operations is desirable;

AND
  1. Experience: One (1) year of experience in the area of computer support and experience in student instructional activities as part of an organized program, particularly in the area of educational software.

To work at a Title I designated school, applicants must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed the following requirements: Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or, obtained an associate's degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or, passed the ParaPro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) with a score of at least 460.

Knowledge of: Educational principles and techniques; student behavior and characteristics; basic discipline techniques; correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; basic mathematics; basic computer concepts; file management; basic security (firewalls, spyware, keeping safe on the Internet, etc); general computer and peripheral use; and MS Office competency desirable.

Skill at: Assisting in the instruction of students in computer operations; securing and maintaining the confidence and cooperation of students and teaching staff; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; problem identification and resolution; evaluating situations accurately and taking effective action; preparing and maintaining accurate and complete records, files and summaries; operating various instructional software programs; and understanding and carrying out written instructions.

Licenses/Certifications: Incumbents hired must either possess the equivalent to each aspect of the ETS Academy Certification, which includes proof of competency in File Management, Media Resources, Processes and Procedures, ETS Components, ETS Applications, MS Office, specifically Word and PowerPoint, Interactive Whiteboards, and ETS Security, or they must receive this certification from the WCSD within two (2) years of employment.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Sometimes they need to move a monitor or CPU and perform recess duties.

Work Environment: The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

TEACHER AIDE I

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, assists teaching staff in a variety of instructional activities and in the supervision of students at school and on field trips. Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Teacher Aide I class differs from the Teacher Assistant class in that the latter is regularly required to perform academic instructional assistance for a significant portion of time. Although positions within the Teacher Aide classification may perform some of the less responsible academic instructional assistance, the primary emphasis of this class is clerical support and student behavior control.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Assists teaching staff in a variety of classroom and school related activities; types tests, correspondence, and routine narrative and statistical reports; corrects student papers and homework; distributes and collects classroom materials and prepares classroom and audio-visual equipment for use; orders supplies and equipment; maintains student and attendance records; maintains classroom bulletin boards; counts school lunch money; supervises students taking tests; observes progress and problem areas of students for referral to the teacher; maintains safety and discipline by supervising and/or assisting in the supervision of students on playgrounds, in lunchrooms, school halls, library, study halls, and with the loading and unloading of buses at school and on field trips; verifies that students out of class have hall passes; enforces school rules and regulations; insures that students leaving campus are authorized to do so, and that students on campus are students of the school; operates common office machines; performs clerical duties as assigned.

When Assigned to Enrichment Activities

When assigned to enrichment activities, this position does not engage in instructional duties and is not required to meet Para Professional or highly qualified requirements.

Develops rapport with students and provides sound leadership; responsible for being an example of good sportsmanship; applies discipline in a fair and positive manner and according to prescribed procedures; assists after school programming staff in a variety of areas throughout the school; collects classroom materials and prepares classroom and audio-visual equipment for use; maintains student and attendance records; supervises students in various activities and settings; maintains safety and discipline by supervising and/or assisting in the supervision of students on playgrounds, in lunchrooms, school halls, library, study halls, and with the loading and unloading of buses at school and on field trips; verifies that all students are accounted for; enforces school rules and regulations; insures that students leaving campus are authorized to do so; operates common office machines; and performs clerical duties as assigned.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience:: Any experience equivalent to education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

1. A high school diploma is desirable;

AND

2. A minimum of six (6) months of experience working with school age youth is desirable when assigned to enrichment aide duties.

Applicants hired by the District after January 8, 2002, to work at a Title I designated school, must possess a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent, and have completed the following requirements: Completed at least 48 semester hours of credit at an accredited college or university; or, obtained an associate?s degree or higher degree from an accredited college or university; or, passed the ParaPro Assessment prepared and administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) with a score of at least 460. Employees hired by the District prior to January 9, 2002, must meet the above requirements by June 30, 2006.

Knowledge of:: Educational principles and techniques; student behavior and characteristics; basic discipline and behavior modification techniques; correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; basic mathematics; current office methods and procedures including filing and records management; common office equipment and its usage.

Skill at:: Securing and maintaining the confidence and cooperation of students; dealing tactfully with students, parents and school personnel; evaluating situations accurately and taking effective action; teaching good sportsmanship; typing with speed and accuracy; spelling correctly; reading, writing and speaking English at a level required for successful job performance; preparing and maintaining accurate and complete records, files and summaries; organizing and distributing instructional materials; making mathematical computations; operating various office equipment; operating and maintaining audio-visual equipment; understanding and carrying out oral and written instructions; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; providing leadership and developing rapport with students when assigned to enrichment aide duties.

Licenses/Certificates:: Possession of, or ability to obtain a CPR Certification is required for teacher aides working in the area of Special Education or an enrichment aide duties.

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.

The Ed Technician Specialist is 21 hours a week, 180 day position. The Teacher Aide Duty Reduction position is 5 hours per week.

Eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work less than 20 hours per week receive Social Security benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses, and Credit Union benefits; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 20 to 24.75 hours per week received PERS retirement benefits, and the Salary Increases, Longevity Bonuses and Credit Union benefits listed below; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 25 to 27.25 hours per week receive the benefits listed below, with the exception of Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance; eligible employees who are regularly scheduled to work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the District.
Holiday: Eligible employees receive up to eleven (11) paid holidays each year. Vacation: Eligible employees receive up to twenty (20) days of paid vacation each year. Sick Leave: Eligible employees receive up to fifteen (15) days of paid sick leave each year. No State Income Tax. No Social Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or more. Retirement benefit offered is the State of Nevada retirement system, Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), which is one of the best in the country.

PERS ELIGIBLE POSITIONS:

Eligible Employees who select the employer paid salary schedule (Schedule A) will have Washoe County School District (WCSD) contribute 100% of the employee's retirement contributions. Eligible employees who select the employer-employee paid salary schedule (Schedule B) will have a portion of the legislatively designated amount paid by WCSD to PERS for retirement benefits and the employee, in turn, will pay the remaining portion of the legislatively designated amount of his/her salary to PERS. These options are introduced and explained in detail during the New Employee Orientation upon selection for employment.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.
