This summer marching band directors' position is the lead position to guide and instruct students in preparation for marching band camp and the upcoming season. The director will serve as part of a team, but will have the main supervisory role of directing staff, delegating when necessary, and to ensure that students are well prepared for pre-game shows, half-time shows and community outreach (i.e. parades, festivals and special events). Marching band directors' will have latitude in scheduling band practices and sectionals during the summer and may begin camp as early as June through August. Directors will engage students in reading music, performing and marching in tempo.

Salary

Below is a breakdown of how the total compensation is allotted:

Current PPS Teachers shall be compensated 15 hours at the workshop rate ($23.32/hr) for pre-band camp or post-band camp and 40 hours at the per diem rate of pay for band camp.

If the successful candidate is not currently a full-time Pittsburgh Public Schools teacher, they will be compensated 40 hours at the workshop rate of $23.32 per hour.

Qualifications

Candidates must be enthusiastic about the fundamental goal of advancing student achievement in an urban public school district. In addition, we are seeking candidates with:

- Valid PA K-12 Music Education teaching certification

- One (1) year minimum of successful experience in a marching band at the undergraduate level, writing pre-game and half-time shows and/or 1 year of experience performing in an undergraduate marching band.

- Experience teaching instrumental music at the middle or high school level.

- Knowledge of PPS policies and procedures.

- Experience and familiarity with the academic, socio-emotional, and cultural needs of urban students and have demonstrated success in working with these students and their parents.

- Ability to cultivate relationships and build a strong culture among staff, students, and families in order to achieve goals.

- Operates with a high level of personal responsibility and optimism

- Value, demonstrate, and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion

Essential Job Functions

Responsibilities of a 2023 Summer High School Marching Band Camp Director include but are not limited to:

1. Organize and lead the Summer Marching Band Camp.

2. Write pre-game and half-time marching band shows with appropriate and tasteful music and marching drills.

3. Schedule and conduct rehearsals during the summer months in preparation for the marching band season, parades, and other community events.

4. Ensure proper uniforms are performance ready (i.e. laundering and dry cleaning).

5. Ordering and securing all necessary equipment and materials for camp (i.e. drum sticks, reeds, mouthpieces, etc.).

6. Submit building permits in a timely manner that include rehearsal and camp dates, and maintain open communication with the building administration and custodial staff.

7. Provide and assume responsibility for the supervision of students during rehearsals and performances both on and off campus.

8. Establish a positive rapport with students and their families.

9. Be visible in the community and participate in community events.

10. Maintain communication with students, parents and school administration regarding calendar of events/performances.

11. Prepare a calendar of events for the school year.

12. Notify the Coordinator of Music regarding transportation needs 1-2 weeks prior to an event/performance.

13. Maintain a balanced transportation budget.

14. Participate in the annual All-City Marching Band Festival and local festivals.

15. Maintain Emergency Care Forms for all marching band members and have available during camp.

16. Ensure that all students participating in Marching Band Camp have a current/updated physical prior to the start of camp.

17. Secure permission slips from all band members for participation in in all off-campus events.

18. Establish, publish and distribute guidelines/rules of conduct for governing student behavior for on and off-campus events.

19. Instruct students in the proper care and maintenance of musical instruments and uniforms.

Staff Absence Policy:?

Staff are expected to be present for their entire work schedule during the duration of the Summer Marching Band Program.
Sick Leave will be awarded to PFT represented employees based on Article 144, Section 6a2 and 6b of the Pittsburgh Federation of Teacher's (PFT) Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Any additional absences during the work schedule will be docked from the staff's pay. If any staff is absent more than 2 days, the staff may be removed from their position and will only be paid for the days worked.
