Job Summary
The Reading Interventionist is responsible for supporting Anchorage School District student achievement in the area of English Language Arts, with special attention to reading. The reading interventionist supports Tier 1 instruction and provides Tier 2 supplemental instruction for students. The interventionist provides small group instruction to struggling students identified through data. The interventionist will implement ASD adopted scientifically evidence-based interventions and instructional practices to students in grades K through 3. This position is also responsible for monitoring, reporting, and communicating student progress and performance. This position will work in collaboration with the ELA team, building principal, and instructional coach to review data to determine intervention groupings. A reading interventionist may serve more than one school. Collaboration and professional learning may include attending professional development opportunities, meeting during shared planning time, and/or collaborating during designated before/after school staff meetings.

This position requires a valid Alaska educator certificate. The number of work days is based upon the AEA negotiated pay scale. Information on the pay scale can be found online on our Labor Relations Department website. This position's grade level, content area taught, and work site may change dependent upon student enrollment and district staffing needs. Positions that are 0.50 FTE to 1.0 FTE are associated with the Alaska Teachers' Retirement System (TRS), positions that are 0.40 to 0.49 FTE are associated with the Alaska Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Positions that are 0.39 FTE or less are not eligible for state retirement benefits.

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate.
  2. Evidence of content knowledge shown by:
    1. a posted degree in the content area of this position; or
    2. a posted minor in the content area of this position; or
    3. passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores (formerly Praxis II) in the content area of this position; or
    4. an endorsement in the content area of this position
  3. Three or more years of successful elementary school teaching.
  4. Strong oral and written communication skills.

  3. Ability to apply instructional strategies on differentiation.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with teachers and administrators.
  5. Experience in teaching scientificly evidence-based reading interventions.
  6. Experience in teaching a structured literacy classroom.
  7. Experience in teaching in a Multi-Tiered System of Support.
  8. Experience using district, student, and site level data to select, implement, and differentiate instruction designed to meet individual student needs.
  9. Knowledge and experience of research, best practices in the science of reading, differentiating instruction, and current educational trends.
  10. Ability to travel to different district buildings to meet needs of students according to data.

Essential Job Functions
The reading interventionist's purpose is to support students develop proficient reading skills that will contribute to their academic growth in reaching 3rd grade proficiency by:
  1. Fostering a safe, trusting, positive environment.
  2. Providing high quality instruction to students in a small group setting.
  3. Using data to provide instruction to students and to bring their skill level to grade-level.
  4. Collaborating with teachers, administrators, the district ELA team, and families to help identify best practices for small group instruction.
  5. Using scientifically evidence-based interventions focusing specifically on individual student need.
  6. Maintaining database documentation in FastBridge of continuous progress monitoring of student performance to make appropriate instructional shifts and ensure progress.
  7. Providing data to school/grade teams and participating in decisions about student progress.
  8. Communicating with teachers, administrators, district ELA team, and families regarding student progress.
  9. Assisting with identifying students for placement in intervention groups.
  10. Providing diagnostic assessments for students as needed.
  11. Providing input for program development.
  12. Supporting implementation of assessment tools and data management systems.
  13. Attending appropriate trainings to improve knowledge and skills.
  14. Performing other duties as assigned.

Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

Work is performed in a professional environment with a wide variety of individuals having differing functions, personalities and abilities, including working with diverse groups of people in a variety of different settings.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
